Though the product line Pavilion is better known for laptops, HP made a display variety for desktop users, and it bringing all the good things. This particular model is being marketed as a gaming monitor, and it’s a pretty interesting monitor. To know more about this display, check out this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide.

Who is it for?

If you’re in the market for a budget gaming monitor that provides reliability and doesn’t skimp out on picture quality, then HP Pavilion 22CWA is something you should really consider. It’s a slick a looking 21-5 inch display, which a good size for dual monitor or even triple monitor setup, plus it’s being marketed as “no bezel” for a seamless dual monitor (but we all know the truth about these types of claim in real world application). Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with VESA-compliant mounting holes, which would have been very convenient for multi-monitor setups.

Though being marketed as a gaming monitor, the HP Pavilion 22CWA is actually a very versatile display that can work perfectly for everyday users. It comes in a floating screen display, which makes it a really nice piece for any workstation, and it’s also ultra-thin, which gives it a sleek and modern look. Aside from really good aesthetics, this product also comes in IPS panel, a technology usually designed for colour-demanding and graphic-centric tasks, making this model a really interesting piece, and definitely a great deal for budget-minded consumers.

Full HD Which Is Actually Nice for Its Price

HP champions the 22CWA as a budget monitor that both gamers and home users can benefit. Its capabilities however, far outstrip what you might expect from a budget display. It runs at Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080p, with 16:9 Aspect Ratio. These digits may feel standard, and pretty basic, but they’re actually good for the price point of the product. Also, it has a pixel density of 102 PPI, which is even more fantastic. Thanks to the IPS panel, which is known for gorgeous and more vivid colors and fantastic viewing angle.s

When it comes to brightness, this product clocks in 250 nits, while the Dynamic Contrast Ratio is at 8,000,000:1. Both digits are actually pretty impressive. Some demanding gamers may feel disappointed with the 60Hz Refresh Rate and 7ms Response Time, which is understandable. But these numbers are simply appropriate considering the capabilities you get from products on its price range.

For average gamers, the 60Hz will not be a big deal, but for hardcore gamers, they can easily discern the choppiness and screen tearing during fast paced movies and games.

The 7ms pixel response time is obviously a tad high for gaming. Usually we see good gaming monitors run at 4ms or below. Interestingly, we don’t see a lot of smearing and blurring with this display. There are some from time to time, but definitely not enough to cause annoying distractions.

Note that specs is one thing on paper, but totally different thing when it comes to its real world application and performance. Aspect ratio, brightness, response time, and refresh rate are important when looking for a specific class of monitor, but also remember that they mean different things across different manufacturers.

And this is where the HP 22CWA really shines. It shoes gorgeous picture that makes you forget those basic numbers you see from the spec sheet. At this price point, we see good monitors, but with TN panels, which obviously suffer from colour accuracy, vividness, and viewing angle. This monitor on the other hand, comes loaded with features that even improve the already stunning picture performance. It’s definitely not the best there is, but for its price point, it’s pretty impressive.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

There’s no VESA compliant mounting holes for this display, which is really unfortunate, considering the size of the screen is really ideal for dual monitor and even triple monitor setup. Should you want to ditch the stand however, you can VESA adapter mounting kit.

With the mounting kit, users will have tons of options for more ergonomic setup. Two of the best options out there are the Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm and  AmazonBasics dual side-by-side monitor arm.

If you’re looking for a dual monitor LCD arm that can support your two 27-inch monitor, but don’t have the budget to spend for premium products, then you can opt for AmazonBasics dual side-by-side monitor arm. This product comes with an affordable price tag, but don’t mistake its price for low quality, as it can certainly stand against the best in the market today.

Design and Features

HP claims their Pavilion 22CWA monitor comes in a bezel-less design, making its 21 inch look a little bit bigger. While the screen really appear bigger than it actually is, it’s not really bezel-less, rather, it sports thin bezel for seamless view of the screen. The bottom bezel is a little thicker, which is made on purpose as it houses the function buttons and power button of the display.

The screen may be small, but it doesn’t feel small when you’re sitting directly in front – it actually feels bigger than advertised. The cabinet is extra thin, and the whole thing looks one elegant piece atop from an open-wedge style stand.

The cabinet is made up of good quality plastic we often see in many premium monitors, and it feels really sturdy. All in all, it’s a really stylish display; looks really sleek and modern.

Buttons and Controls

There are four clearly labeled buttons in this HP display, while the Power button is located further right. The buttons are easy to see, making them convenient to use. These buttons provide quick access for the Preset modes of the display.

Connectivity Options

Input options include all the basic options you will need, namely the standard VGA and HDMI ports.

Convenient Extras

As said earlier, the HP Pavilion 22CWA comes equipped with some really nice features, and some of which are provided for convenience. One good example is the HP Enhance+ technology, which further improves image quality through advanced noise reduction filter.

For the hardware, there’s an option package that includes Thunderbolt Adapter, which provides Apple compatibility. Should you want to hook this display to your MacBook, you can either use the HDMI or the VGA port. MacBooks will either have the display port or thunderbolt port (they are of the same fitting). So, you will need to purchase either a DisplayPort to VGA adapter, or a HDMI to Displayport cable. Apple or Belkin brand will be the best. In my opinion, HDMI will give you the best picture quality.

Unique Stand, But with Limited Adjustability

The open-wedge style stand offers a new look, and it may look like there are hidden functionalities in it, but there’s really none. All it does it tilt the monitor back and forth a bit. No swivel, height adjustment, or pivot.

Bottom Line

HP Pavilion 22CWA certainly has lots of good things to offer. For one, the price is hard to beat, considering the performance and all the features it provides. Picture is stunning, while viewing angle is consistent, even at extreme angles on either side – that’s the beauty of IPS panels. Construction wise, this product is really well-built, plus it comes with the standard HP warranty.

One of the biggest drawbacks we found in this product is in the design of the cabinet itself. It is bad enough that the stand doesn’t allow much adjustability options, but it also lacks the VESA compliant mounting holes. It’s really unfortunate, since the size of this monitor is perfect for dual monitor and even triple monitor setups. You can of course, get yourself VESA adapter and mounting arm. Also, the 7ms response time and 60hz refresh rate are a bit low, but we can’t really expect much for a price of this size and the panel technology it comes with. Also, there are no audio options for this display.

HP Pavilion 22CWA is designed with budget in mind. It doesn’t blow you out with amazing features, but it’s pretty impressive with all things considered, as it comes with a really affordable price. If you like a cheap display for everyday use, or a secondary display, and play games with your PC from time to time, then you will not regret this display.
