Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H; An In-Depth Review

In the past couple of years, we have seen great development in display technology from different brands, with their various monitor series. One of the strongest brands out there with a really remarkable series is the Dell Ultrasharp series for one obvious reason – ultra sharp display’s popularity is made possible by accurate colors and the trademark Dell quality performance. One of the newest additions to this line is the Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H, a 27-inch multimedia monitor especially engineered for professionals who wants to work and multitask at Full HD quality.

Who is it for?

If you’re a professional who constantly work on your computer, and in need of good video performance and big audio quality, and something to depend on multitasking, then the Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H is right for you. This multimedia monitor comes with a built-in webcam and a set of high-performance speakers, making it perfect for video conferences and simultaneously multitasking apps and windows on screen.

Those who have long been fans of Dell’s UltraSharp series will surely appreciate the excellent quality and decent color accuracy and consistency of UZ2715H. This particular product is a little different than other models in the series, as the 1920 x 1080 resolution is a big step down from the usual 2560 x 1440 resolution we find in other products under its banner. Despite the limitation in resolution however, this monitor has many other great features and functions you can enjoy. The IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel for example, displays bold and decently accurate colors.

Extreme Multitasking and Full HD Takes Teamwork to Your Screen

Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H’s biggest upside is its ability to let you multitask and get productive at work more efficiently. The 27-inch screen is big enough to open multiple applications and windows, including windows for video conferences. Pair that with the monitor’s Full HD capability, and you get to enjoy smooth multimedia performance, with video and audio, thanks to the built-in webcam and speakers optimized for Microsoft Lync.

Decently Accurate Colors Right Out of the Box and Above Average Grayscale Performance

Based on Chromaticity test, Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H displays accurate colors right out of the box. All red, green, and blue, though not in their perfect coordinates, lies very close to their ideal dots. Green is a little misaligned, which is relatively a common issue among many different types of monitors today, but it doesn’t cause any oversaturation of colors, and obviously slightly better than what BenQ BL2710PT has.

The grayscale performance, though not outstanding, is generally good in this model. Based on DisplayMate 64-Step Gray-Scale test, the IPS panel used in UZ2715H can display almost every shade of gray. The last two light shades look compressed and whitewashed, which results to minor highlight detail lost. The dark grayscale performance is far better though, as the screen is able to display even the darkest shades. Colors and gray-scale quality unity are kept intact, no matter where the angle. Same goes to the screen’s luminosity.

With Built-in Webcam, Microphone and Speakers for Your Convenience

Though not fantastic, the built-in 2MP webcam (located in the upper bezel) performs well. There are some noises when used in a well-lit room and lacking of color and details. The built-in dual microphone (located at the bottom bezel) also does the job quite well; it eliminates echo and doesn’t cause feedback when used alongside with the speakers.

The speakers on the other hand, are surprisingly good. First, they are strategically placed underneath the screen. They are powerful enough for most types of computing use, ensuring good volume levels and sound quality, way better than the usual speakers.

Picture Options and Preset Modes

Picture settings include all the basic Brightness, Contrast, Dynamic Contrast, and Sharpness. This Dell monitor has seven (7) picture presets, namely Standard, Movie, Game, Paper (for text viewing), Multimedia, Color Temperature, and Custom Color. This monitor also comes with Hue and Saturation settings at Game mode or Movie mode, and settings for Red, Green, and Blue settings for Custom Color mode. UltraSharp UZ2715H also has a Response Time setting option that lets you speed up the monitor’s pixel performance as you play your favorite games.

Slow Pixel Response, Not Built for Action-Packed Games But Good Enough for General Use

Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H works with 8-millisecond (gray-to-gray) pixel response, which is far from the ideal. This causes blurring, especially in playing high-paced action packed titles like Burnout Paradise on PlayStation 3 console and Aliens vs. Predator on the desktop PC. Dell equipped this monitor with Response Time Overdrive feature, but it does little on getting rid of motion artifacts.

On the good side though, UZ2715H has fat input lag (the time it takes for the monitor to recognize command from the controller), which is at 10.2-milliseconds (based on Leo Bodnar Video Signal Lag Tester), which is the standard for excellent input lag, and quite a great function to have when playing games.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

There aren’t a lot of options for 27-inch displays in dual monitor setups, and in the case of UltraSharp UZ2715H it would be much better to use it as a stand-alone display or pair it with something smaller, and other devices such as a laptop or a tablet for multiple monitor setup.

The good news is that, this product is VESA compatible, which means you can use third-party ergonomic solutions such as fully adjustable LCD monitor arm or even wall mounts and get the best setup for your display.

The Ergotron MX Desk Mount LCD Arm is designed to lift displays and all-in-one computers that weights up to 30lbs. It has 5 inches height adjustment, and lets you move your display smoothly and conveniently anywhere you want on your desk. It is equipped with the brand’s patented Constant Force (CF) technology that lets you reposition your screen anywhere with one simple touch, and hold your display securely in its position. Also, because it lifts your arm off your desk, it helps your desk look clean and neat from clutter.

It’s a fully adjustable dual LCD monitor arm with solid polished aluminum construction and high quality materials. It can supports two 27-inch displays and both arms can be adjusted independently, allowing users to reposition their display; up, down, forward and back, with one simple touch, and still keep the displays secured and stable in place through the help of its patented Constant Force (CF) technology.

Design wise, Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H looks simple, nothing out of the ordinary, but undeniably beautiful. As always, build and finish are in good quality, quite a common trait among Dell products. The cabinet is finished with black and grey, with rounded bezel corners. The cabinet is relatively slim, and the monitor is supported by a nice simple and stable stand.

There is also the Hook button designed for Microsoft Lync, video conference software embedded in this monitor. It blinks when there is an incoming call. Pressing the button will automatically connect users to the call. Other buttons include access for volume control, speakers and microphone mute buttons.

Good Set of I/O Ports

Despite its limited features, Dell has made the I/O ports aspects of this monitor generous. The cabinet has two (2) HDMI ports (one for MHL connection, allowing users to connect their mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets) a VGA port, and a DisplayPort 1.2 connection.

Though still not the most practical in today’s everyday use standards, the cabinet also houses the two (2) highspeed USB 3.0 ports. The left side of the cabinet also houses the 3.5 mm audio jack for headphone and microphone.

Stable Stand with Limited Adjustments

The flat square stand of this Dell monitor looks simple and elegant, and undeniably provides stable and secured support for the display. However, it’s not the most ergonomic and adjustable stand out there to have. This display doesn’t come with height-adjustment, it doesn’t swivel and pivot. It does however, allow tilting of the screen vertically for up to 25°.

The good sign is that, it does come with VESA interface mounting standard, making it very easy and convenient for you to get more ergonomic options, such as third party LCD monitor stands, or better yet, a wall mount to take full advantage of the big display.

Environmentally Friendly Design with Reliable Efficiency

Dell is known for making environmentally conscious products, and their UltraSharp UZ2715H is no different. The Dell UltraSharp 27 Multimedia Monitor meets the latest regulatory and environmental standards of Energy Star, Epeat (Gold rated) and TCO Certified Displays.

The product itself, is made up of premium-quality materials; BFR/PVC-free laminates in its circuit boards and has arsenic-free glass and a mercury-free LED panel, while the chassis is made up of more than 25% post-consumer recycled plastics.

When it comes to its power consumption, this multimedia monitor is also efficient for its size and function. It consumes only 17 watts of power at Standard mode, and 21 watts in Multimedia mode. Many 27-inch models out there consume around 32 watts to 40 watts, BenQ BL2710PT and Viewsonic VP2770-LED respectively, for example.

Bottom Line

(image from Amazon)

The Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H is undeniably a solid performer, and really a good choice for professional computer users looking for a display that is fully capable of good video conferencing and with powerful audio output. It has decent color accuracy, and does a good job in showing different shades of gray, and one of its biggest advantage is it has one of the fastest input lag performance in the market today.

It’s far from being the best 27-inch display out there, but it certainly on its way as a decent display for daily use. Like other good products, it has its own share of shortcomings as well, such as the height adjustability limitation, hard-to-reach USB ports, and black could be darker.

All in all, Dell UltraSharp UZ2715H is a decent display for everyday office computing use. Though features are not ideal, they are respectable in their own way, and really helps improve any user’s computing experience, particularly in multimedia. It’s well equipped with good set of hardware for good quality video conferencing, office work, VoIP calls and various multimedia tasks.
