Impressive Image Quality Performance, from Color Accuracy, Panel Uniformity, Gamma Response and Default RGB

Colors are impressively accurate, considering the TN panel it’s built with. TN panels usually scores the lowest color accuracy, while IPS panels have the best scores. The panel for Dell S2716DG however, is quite impressive, as colors red, green and blue stayed close to their ideal coordinates.

For panel uniformity, it showed that Dell certainly used high grade TN panel for this product, as it works amazingly showing only 9% variance for a 27-inch screen.

For its gamma performance, Dell S2716DG scored 2.19, which is very close to the ideal rate of 2.20. This means the out-of-the-box gamma performance of this monitor is near perfect, images are neither underexposed (they don’t make black crush) and underexposed (don’t washed out with too little black level in its details).

Dell has always been known to have better default RGB, and this monitor is no exception. Yes, their UltraSharp series have better default RGB, but this one right here comes with excellent color profiles, even close to perfect.

Excellent Gaming Monitor, Swift and Responsive Action and Undistorted Images

Dell S2716DG; An In-Depth Review

Dell S2716DG may be designed in a traditional format – flat screen with fast and smooth gaming performance. The top tier TN panel however, is combined with 1ms Response time, 144Hz Refresh Rate and Nvidia G-Sync technology, bringing better motion fluidity and good color palette for better gaming immersion.

Its closest rival out there is the Asus RoG Swift PG278Qwhich also holds its own in terms of performance and gaming-centric features. Dell on the other hand, used the tried and tested approach of true OSD, though still lacks some good options we normally see from higher-end gaming monitors.

Enabling the G-Sync in Dell S2716DG completely eliminates ghosting and judder, making way for better motion fluidity, and delivering the best gaming experience.

Decent Media Performance for Movies and TV Shows

As with other gaming monitors that runs fast refresh rate and comes with G-sync technology, Dell S2716DG is left to run solely with its TN panel, as both refresh rate and G-sync are nullified. However, the TN panel does a great job in running movies, colors are pretty accurate, there’s a good level of black depth, and flesh tones remained warm, without looking overly red. Motion smoothness is also very achievable, which is an inherent trait of panels with faster refresh rates.

Also, unlike other gaming monitors with G-sync technology in the market, Dell included HDMI port in this product, which means you don’t need to depend solely on DisplayPort. This obviously, makes way for more input options and things to connect the screen with, from gaming console, notebook, set top box, etc., without needing to switch cables.

Limited Vertical Viewing Angle Range

As with other TN-based panels out there, the vertical viewing angle of this Dell monitor is limited, which means switching the screen from landscape to portrait can cause color shift issues, as the up and down side of screens become right and left side of the screen.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

Well, there are not a lot of options out there to mount multiple 27-inch displays side-by-side, but there are a couple of good options that will be more than enough.

It has the same built and flexibility as the dual wall mount, except that it is wall mounted. If you don’t want to mount it on your wall, then  you can choose the desk mount version – Ergotron LX Desk Mount LCD Arm.

Design and Features

Unlike many gaming monitors out there, Dell S2716DG comes with a simple and minimalistic design, no loud ‘for gaming aesthetic designs’, such as a cool strip of color, flashing lights, etc. Rather, it looks well refined and look like most of Dell monitors – simple, yet elegant.

The bezels are dual-stage, with slender hard plastic exterior component and a thin panel border. The borders blend nicely with the screen’s surface when turned off. The bezels are at 8mm (0.31-inch) at the top, 17mm (0.30 inch) on its sides and bottom. The surface comes with a medium matte anti-glare, which is very helpful in keeping glares and reflections off the display.

The cabinet is glossy plastic that features and looking at the side of the cabinet, the monitor is visibly thin, about 20mm (0.79-inch) at its thinnest point, while bulks out to the center.

The depth (including the stand) is at 200mm (7.87 inches), with the screen’s surface sitting at 34mm (1.34 inch) back from the front edge of its stand,. This may be an issue with some of the deeper monitor designs, which means you should have a fairly deep desk.

Buttons and Functions

While Dell S2716DG is definitely not part of the brand’s UltraSharp series, it has some nice OSD (on-screen display) and a few extra features that makes it quite an advanced gaming monitor.

The right side of the bottom bezel houses the forward-facing control buttons, while the power LED glows. It emits a low unobtrusive white glow when the monitor is on, and flashes when on stand-by mode. Pressing the Power button to turn off the monitor will turn off the LED as well.

Pressing any of the four buttons will pop out a small menu that contains a short list of the monitor’s most-used features. A convenient time-saver, as gamers will spend less time looking for brightness setting or change the screen’s default profile, etc. This mini-Menu also provides access to the full OSD, with each section clearly labeled and easy to comprehend. Almost all of the sub-sub menus are shown, making navigation nice and easy.

The first button of the quick menu shows the Preset modes, which includes Standard, Warm, Cool and Custom Color (manually adjust Red, Green and Blue). The second button of in the OSD controls the Volume of anything connected to its 3.5mm headphone jack. The third one is the Main Menu System, while the fourth is the Exit. The first two buttons are customizable.

The Main menu is comprised of different sections, namely Brightness/Contrast, Input Source (HDMI or DisplayPort), Color (Preset Modes including Standard, Warm, Cool and Custom Color, and Reset Colo), Display, Audio, Menu (Language, Transparency, Timer, and Reset Menu), Personalize (Shortcut Key 1 and 2, Preset Modes, Volume and Reset Personalization) and Others (Monitor Deep Sleep and Factory Reset).

Connectivity Options

The side of the cabinet houses the ports, namely two USB 3.0 ports (with rapid charging for connected devices at the bottom port) and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There is also K-slot located at the far left, while the left of the stand houses the power input. The neck of the stand also houses the rear DisplayPort 1.2 which supports G-sync, HDMI 1.4, one USB 3.0 upstream port, and two USB 3.0 downstream ports.

The HDMI supports 256-x1440p resolution and lower, and 60Hz Refresh Rate. AMD GPU can run the maximum resolution, but of course, can’t make use of its G-sync or any associated features like 3D Vision or ULMB.

With Fully Adjustable and Ergonomic Stand, with VESA Compliant Mounting Holes

Dell S2716DG; An In-Depth Review

The stand that comes with this gaming monitor is fully adjustable, providing that ergonomic flexibility you need when playing your games. It allows tilt (21° backwards, 5° forward) movement, swivel (45° left and right), height adjustment of 5.12 inches and pivot 90° to rotate the screen from landscape to portrait, and vice versa. At its lowest setting, the bottom edge of the screen hovers at 2.5 inches above the desk, while the top is 17 inches.

The backside of the screen keeps the glossy plastic, while the backside of the stand is medium-dark matte silver-colored plastic.

The best thing about this stand is it hides the 100x100mm VESA-compliant mounting holes. This means you can mount this 27-inch gaming display to a better third party ergonomic solution such as monitor stand with fully articulating arm, wall mount, or use it for dual monitor setup or triple monitor setup. The stand can be removed from the monitor through the quick release button located behind the stand neck.

The stand also comes with a simple and quite resourceful cable management.

Bottom Line

A couple of years ago, the world was introduced to ASUS PG278Q, the first monitor to come with 144Hz Refresh Rate and support WQHD (2560x1440p) resolution, as well as G-Sync technology. Using very similar panel, Dell came up with their own version, this time, with HDMI port and minus the ‘loud and proud’ gaming aesthetics.

In terms of gaming, Dell S2716DG comes in traditional format, there’s nothing to complain about this display, it is exceptional to say the least. The TN panel runs games in ultra-fast and smooth fashion. The flat screen may look ordinary compared to the curved screen many newer gaming monitors that came out in the market today. However, we all know the challenges of there is on curved screens, as they run with a resolution that are not natively supported by all games, which results to image fidelity loss when viewing the screen off center, inferior vertical viewing angle and shows slight image warping when game’s interface forces is stretched across the width of the screen. The traditional setup for this monitor is excellent for gaming. Responsiveness is where this monitor really shines, its outstanding responsiveness gives users the best chance to maximize 144Hz refresh rate. Activate the G-sync and gamers get even better gaming experience by eliminating screen tearing.

Pricing is one important factor in this product, as it can be both beneficial and detrimental. On one hand, its price is within range of gaming monitors with IPS panels from other brands. But of course, when you really think of it, the price is just there for guidance, and the price for Dell S2716DG continues to drop, making it the better choice.

Out-of-the-box image quality is something they really need to work on in this model. There were some washed out colors from time to time. Of course, you can always fix it with some tweaking with the OSD.

All in all, Dell S2716DG offers great gaming experience as a gaming monitor. It is responsive enough to keep even the most competitive and discerning gamers happy. For its all-around performance, it is pretty decent as well. Not to mention its design is pretty sensible for any setting and workstation.
