Who is it for?

The Dell Precision Tower 5810 is especially made for professional 3D graphics rendering, and this computer alone is fully capable of making and rendering CGI film form storyboard, complete from pre-visualization, final rendering and editing. It’s also the perfect tool for biomedical research, energy exploration, architecture, or any multimillion-dollar projects that involves hypercritical work on an extremely high-end PC.

Powerful Processor for Dependable Performance

Units that come with Intel Xeon E5-2687W v3 processor, with 10 physical scores and Hyper-Threading has no trouble working on 20 streams of data, simultaneously. This gives the workstation a score of 1582 from the CineBench R15 test, which easily doubles HP Z1 G2 and Lenovo ThinkStation P300 SFF workstation scores. Though it is not as robust as the HP Z840 which scored 2588 points, the latter uses a pair of eight-core Zeon CPUs with Hyper-Threading, which basically amps its performance.


Excellent Multimedia Test Scores for Designers

For its multimedia test scores, Dell Precision Tower 5810 is excellent. It tied HP Z840 in Handbrake test with 36 seconds, and only a few seconds behind HP in Adobe Photoshop Cs6 test (3:11). For its 3D test however, the Dell workstation scored excellent scores, topping the 3DMark Cloud Gate at 33,357 points, and 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme at 4581 points, as well as the Heaven (57 fps) and Valle (65fps) tests for Ultra quality.


Excellent for Architecture Tasks, Gaming Designs and CAD Programming

Though it’s not directly marketed as a gaming system, Dell Precision Tower has no problem running gaming design, and its test scores actually will give you a good picture of its capacity for rendering real-time 3D graphics, such as for CAD program or architecture. The Dell Precision Tower 5810 comes in a large tower chassis, which is far from portable. Dell however, made sure it has some ergonomics in it, as both its front and back panels are perforated, providing excellent airflow throughout the tower. The front side is a simple vertical bi-level, and features an aluminum handle to help users move the tower around. The same handle can be found at the backside, which allows easy pulling of the workstation under the desk from the other side. This design truly put IT pros in mind, as they’re the once who will service it.


Tool-Less Chassis for Easy Upgrades

All the touch points and levers are nicely marked with the same cornflower blue color, and everything is tool-less, which means you can easily pop the PCIe cards, hard drives, or even the power supply in and out of the chassis in a couple of seconds. It basically uses the same chassis as Dell Precision T3610, which is also an excellent workstation of its own.


Incredible Specs and Configurations

Base configuration of Dell Precision Tower 5810 starts at $1200, but upgrades such as 400GB Serially Attached Storage (SAS) SSDs in RAID 0 array, and cost $2100 more. The chassis can support up to four SAS, and will amp the storage space to 1.6TB. Its 32GB memory is worth $815. Both options will max out the system memory DIMM and its internal storage bays. This means additional internal expansion is quite limited. However, the Precision Tower 5810 makes memory and storage upgrade easy than fellow single-processor workstation Apple Mac Pro 2013, which requires full disassembly of the chassis.


The chassis has just one PCI slot, but the slots for other cards are easily accessible. Should you order a unit with 12GB NVIDIA Quadro K6000 graphics card, there’s a Thunderbolt 2 card, and a Remote Host Access Card for you. Precision 5810 come with excellent set of external connectors. On the front side of the chassis, there are 3 USB 2.0 ports and 1 USB 3.0 port, along with the microphone and headphone jacks. The top panel has a molded tray to accommodate external hard drive and other workstation peripherals users might need in their work. Also, there’s a tray of DVD burner on the front the good old CD and DVD storage.

All other USB 3.0 ports on this system are black, instead of the usual blue for aesthetic purposes. This means you may need to look closer to find the USB 3.0 ports.

The backside of the chassis houses the system’s audio line/out port, as well as the Ethernet port, a PS/2 ports for keyboard and mouse, a serial port, additional three USB 2.0 ports, and three more USB 3.0 ports. This workstation doesn’t come with WiFi and media card reader, but then again, you can easily add those through the USB ports.

Dell Precision Tower 5810 is pricey, that’s for sure. This is due to a lot of reasons, from four SAS SSDs to NVIDIA Quadro K6000 graphics card. But if you’re a professional who depends on high-end performance for hypercritical works for multiple multimillion-dollar contracts simultaneously, then it is worth the investment. If you have the budget and you really think you need a high-end workstation as powerful as this, then the quality performance and the benefits you will get can easily justify your investment.

The same ways other Precision workstation models inspire confidence in its quality and performance, Precision 5810 never failed to deliver what is expected of it to do. It delivers high-end performance for design and engineering professionals. But more than that, the new Haswell-based Xeon processors, along with the DDR3 AM provides a giant leap for its performance. Pair that with the right graphics card and you have the ultimate workstation for multi-million dollar project you wish to finish. This workstation outclasses many of its competitors, especially on expandability and upgradability, such as Apple Mac Pro. 

All in all, Dell Precision Tower 5810 is impressive in all areas, quite a dependable system for hypercritical tasks, especially for design and engineering professionals. It is IT friendly, and with the combination of 10-core Intel Xeon processor and Nvidia Quadro K6000 graphics card, it can handle almost anything.
