Network Cables


As their name suggest, networking cables are used to connect one device (usually a computer) to another for networking, or connect multiple network computers to share computer peripherals like printers, scanners, etc. Different cables are used for different networking purpose; the most common of these cables are the Coaxial cable, Twister Pair, and optical fiber cables. These types are used depending on the protocol, topology and size of the network. Devices are also separated through these cables for a few meters (through Ethernet), or nearly up to unlimited distances (depending on the length of the cable or Internet interconnections).


  • Coaxial Cable – Usually used for TV home antennas, this cable is the standard for 10Mbps Ethernet cable and other signals with bandwidths of multiple megahertz. It confines the electromagnetic wave inside the cable, and can be bent and twisted without compromising the transmission of data. Newer version of this cable is used for high-speed home networking application called Ethernet over coax.


  • Twisted Pair Cables – This is a type of wiring where pairs of wires (forward conductors and return conductors in one circuit) are twisted and joined together to cancel EMI (electromagnetic interference) from other pairs and external sources. This type of cable system is used for both corporate and home Ethernet networks.

This cable comes in three types: shielded, unshielded and foil.


  • Ethernet (Crossover) Cables – Ethernet crossover cable is a type of Ethernet cable used for connecting computer straight to devices where they are normally connected, such as router, network switch, or hub, or directly connecting two computers through network adapters. Many new models of Ethernet devices support the use of this type of cable to replace patch cables.


  •  Patch Cables – This is form of electrical or optical cable used for connecting a single electronic or optical device to another for signal routing. Different types of devices (switch connected to PC or switch connected to router) are connected through this type of cable. It works in fast connection speed and is produced in different colors to make them distinguishable. This type of cable is also relatively shorter than most types, usually no longer than 2 meters.


  • Fiber Optic Cable – This cable has a glass core surrounded by many protective layers made of different materials. It transmits data using pulses of light running through the glass. The outer layer is usually made up of either PVC or Teflon to prevent any chances of interference. This cable is very expensive but it is fully capable of handling higher bandwidth and can transmit data faster even in extended distance.


  • USB Cables – USB (Universal Serial Bus) cables are made up of twisted-pair wiring. Most USB cables connect to the computer as a peripheral device (keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc.), rather than to another computer for networking. Special adapters like dongles also connect to the USB port directly as an Ethernet.
