Varidesk Pro; An In-Depth Review

Sitting is horrible for your health, it can hurt your body in a lot of ways, and its long-term effect can be devastating. This is the reason behind the rising demand of ergonomic workstations, particularly standing desks and sit-stand desks. Most of these products however, require you to get rid of your desk and replace it with a whole new workstation, an option that seems impractical to most computer users, especially laptop users who doesn’t really need a big desk. The latest addition to this growing market are the desktop risers, they are designed to provide computer users the sit-stand benefits without getting rid of their existing desks. One of the highly rated desktop risers today is the Varidesk Pro. Check out this review from Dual Monitors Guide to know more.

Who is it for?

If completely changing your workspace by ditching your existing desk is not an option, and if treadmill desk upgrade neither sound appealing, nor practical for you, then the Varidesk Pro is something you should consider. Rather than forcing you for a wholesale swap to an upright desk, this sit-stand solution sits on your existing desk and gives you the luxury of switching between sitting and standing whenever you need to.

Benefits

Change Your Workstation Without Changing Your Desk

Naturally Intuitive Design

Working at VariDesk Pro feels natural and intuitive – you can switch from sitting to standing quickly and without experiencing any inefficiency or problems while typing. Also, the standing height actually rises and moves the desk towards you, which makes your display closer to you as you stand, giving you better ergonomic setup.

Pneumatically Assisted Mechanism to Smoothly Switch Between Sitting and Standing

The pneumatically assisted mechanism of Varidesk Pro is its secret for smooth transition for sitting position to standing position, and vice versa. This raises and lowers the entire top working surface, allowing users to place their monitor, laptop and all computer peripherals they need for their workstation by simply pressing the two handles on both side and lift the surface to their desired height.

This utilitarian designed however, makes it hard to hide the steel lifting arms, pneumatic features and various supporting structures, making the whole thing look mechanical on your desk.

Better Room for Your Keyboard and Mouse

The keyboard and mouse are positioned between being placed under the raised working surface (when desk riser is set in standing position), and on the lower surface (when set in sitting position). Thanks to the built-in extended keyboard and mouse surface, you have a spacious and better room to operate, which also lets you pull them clear and cover the top surface.

Can Perfectly Balance Weight of Things You Put On

Surprisingly, the desk stands solid and sturdy, even when you put a lot of computer peripherals and other office materials on the front part of the desk. This product is well-balanced, and doesn’t topple even when you put up to 40+ lbs. weight on its surface.

Design and Features

(image from Amazon)

Design wise, the Varidesk Pro is definitely not the most appealing out there. The black painted steel finish and plain black vinyl covered MDF makes it somewhat unappealing to many desks. The curved edges are designed for safety purposes.

Versatile But Utilitarian Design

Design wise, nothing is extraordinary about this desktop riser, but it is its simplicity that makes it versatile – allowing users to easily integrate the riser with most furniture setups, rather than needing for a replacement for the existing desk. This simple, yet utilitarian design raises few issues, but there are lots of practical solutions to make it work just fine. Such as the lack of ability to separately adjust the monitor height (laptop displays) and keyboard (extra keyboard for laptop users) height. Also, when transitioning, you need to be careful not to extend the monitor cables and other peripherals’ cables too far. Minor issues that all you need is common sense to figure out.

Also, though build wise, it is not the most aesthetically pleasing, the material used gives it a solid construction and high-quality value. A hardwood material for the top surface might be a nice upgrade for the future varieties of this product. Or the aluminum brushed stand from Apple Thunderbolt Display can be a good way to get an inspiration. The same solid material however, keeps the whole thing and everything you put on it, stable and secured.

Easy Switch Between Sitting and Standing

To switch from sitting to standing, simply loosen the two screws located on each side of the keyboard tray and push them in to get the tray out of the way. Then, slightly press the top to release the springs and pull in the two adjustment levers and lightly lift them up. The desk riser will then start to move, and you have 11 setting options to set its height.

You may not be able to stop at the locking position all the time, but a quick press or up to release the adjustment lever will audibly lock it in place. Adjusting through the levers will cause a loud ‘clang’ sound, which suggests the Varidesk to be locked in place.

Moving back to the sitting position is as easy as setting to standing position. Simply pull in the adjustment levers and lightly push the top surface down it reaches your desired position.

Fully Assembled and Sits Stable and Secured On Your Desk

This product simply sits on your existing desk. Users don’t have to do any installing or setups to secure the riser on its place. It is designed to be heavy for optimum stability, and comes fully assembled and in one piece right out of the box, ready to use. It may feel a little awkward to pull out from its box, and can be really heavy, so make sure you ask a friend to help you unbox it and whenever you need to position it on your desk or move it around.

Easy Setup

To setup this desk riser to your desk, all you have to do is position the product on its spot and place your laptop (or monitor for desktop setup) on its work surface.  When using cables, check the length and positioning of your cables, make sure they won’t entangle as you switch between sitting to standing position and vice versa.

It will be best if you use wireless keyboard and mouse, for smooth position transition.

Bottom Line

(image from Amazon)

As a desktop riser, the Varidesk Pro doesn’t require you to ditch your existing desk. Rather, it needs your existing desk to have something to sit on. It’s a clever, practical, and very inexpensive way to get a sit-stand workstation solution. It’s a product that comes from one of the early innovators of its category, and the first time this product came up, it garnered a lot of rave reviews from popular review sites and consumer websites. However, the rise to popularity of desk risers resulted to more and more manufacturers making more options. Today, Ergotron’s WorkFit-A and WorkFit-S, and Kangaroo and Wallaby’s line or risers from Ergodesktop are taking over the market, but Varidesk Pro still holds its ground against the tough competition.

All in all, the VariDesk Pro is more than a decent solution for your sit-to-stand workstation needs. It’s a more practical alternative for people who can’t or don’t want to get a new desk for their workspace. It offers easy transition between sitting and standing, and it features 11 different height settings to fit your comfort and ergonomic requirements. If all you want is a simple, fast, practical and affordable way to have a sit-stand desk, then you want to check this product out.
