Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q: An In-Depth Review

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q is one of the very first serious 4K monitors in today’s market, and as a matter of fact, it is the brand’s very first 24-inch UHD (Ultra High-Definition) desktop monitor and is only one of three 4K displays under Dell’s ever-growing roster. The other two are the high-end UltraSharp UP3214Q and its affordable version P2185Q. The UltraSharp UP2414Q is truly a stunning monitor, with superb color accuracy and grayscale performance, and generous set of features. Like most 4K displays, it is a little pricey (though it’s relatively affordable compared to most 4K monitors today), but is it worth every penny? Who is it for?

If you’re looking for a 4K monitor for general computing use, work and home entertainment, but don’t want to hurt your pockets, then you should check out Dell UltraSharp UP2414QThough it’s a little pricey, it is relatively less expensive than many of its competition, plus it delivers it provides the best bung for your buck, thanks to its exceptional out-of-the-box color accuracy, excellent connectivity and fully adjustable and stable stand.

Benefits

Exquisite, Stunning But Reasonably-Priced 4K Display

There are not a lot of 4K monitors in the market right now, but Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q does a great job in 4K display performance, particularly in delivering sharp and highly detailed images, and superb overall brightness. Many consider this monitor a breakthrough, one that challenges and push the boundaries of 4K technology.

Ultra HD and High Pixel Density to Show You Every Details You Need to See

(Image from Amazon)

Whether you’re working with game development, CGI animation or applications, or video editing, this Dell monitor lets you see everything up close and personal, down to the smallest details. The high pixel density of UltraSharp UP2414Q sharpens videos and images, even the tiniest details, leaving you with highly detailed results. The Ultra HD 3840 x 2160 packs four times the resolution of the Full HD.

This monitor also comes equipped with Dell Display Manager Easy Arrange feature, which allow users to display windows side-by-side neatly.

Superbly Accurate Colors for Vivid and Accurate Images and Performance

(Image from Amazon)

Excellent color accuracy is among UltraSharp UP2414Q’s biggest pros. This monitor passed chromaticity test with flying colors; all red, blue and green stayed really close to their ideal CIE coordinates, and colors look uniform and evenly saturated based on 25-level Color Scales test, while the inky black of the panel give each and every color noticeable pop. This is great news for anyone who does color critical work, especially in the fact that this monitor is color quality calibrated right out of the box, with factory calibration of Delta-E<2.

Users can work confidently with this display, knowing it is compatible with majority of industry’s standards, with wide color coverage such as 99% AdobeRGB and 100% sRGB.

Also, users can make their own calibration using the monitor’s UltraSharp Color Calibration Solution software and make their own custom color palette.

Great Grayscale Performance

This monitor also had no trouble in showing every shade of gray; DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale Test proved that this monitor is great in displaying all details and shadows of images.

Decent 8-Millisecond Pixel Response Rate

The 8-millisecond pixel response rate of this Dell monitor means it is not a great screen for hardcore gaming, as it is a bit too high for games that require fast reaction times. This time however, is enough to support HD movies (though with a little blurring here and there). In terms of hardcore gaming, you may have to pair this display some epic graphics hardware system to run the latest and most graphics-demanding games. And even then, you may have to make some compromises. After all, most PC builds today are not quite ready for 4K brand of gaming, though there are many hardware out there that comes close.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Option

As like any other 24-inch computer displays, Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q is easy to pair with third-party monitor mounts, such as LCD monitor arm and wall mounts.  And like any other mid-sized displays, this 4K monitor is great for dual monitor or even triple monitor setups.  The 8-millisecond pixel response rate may not be the best solution for hardcore gaming, but its excellent color quality, superb grayscale performance, and outstanding attention to details makes it a great solution for professional work, such as CGI animation, game development, video editing, and home theater and entertainment, such as watching movies.

You can pair this display with Ergotron LX Dual Stacking Arm and sit two of them side-by-side or put one on top of the other, for dual monitor setup. Also, you can also use the other arm for your laptop and extend your laptop's screen to UltraSharp UP2414Q for larger screen real estate and better display for your work.

Design and Features

(Image from Amazon)

Design wise, you can expect Dell-quality in UltraSharp UP2414Q, as the brand love to keep its products uniform – the monitor looks simple and straightforward. The curved cabinet uses the same black and silver design we find in other Dell products with 0.75-inch bezels. The monitor comes into two parts; the monitor and the stand. The latter easily and smoothly clips to the rear side of the cabinet, without needing any screws.

Buttons and Functions

This Dell monitor sports five (5) touch-sensitive button and a Power button, all are strategically positioned at the front right side of the bezel. The function buttons gives access to the Menu, which shows the on-screen labels, making it easy for users to navigate the Menu. They are clear, logical and very easy to use.

UltraSharp UP2414Q features eight (8) Preset modes, namely Standard, Movie, Multimedia, Paper, Color Temperature, Game and Custom Color settings. Custom Color preset mode lets you fine-tune your monitor’s color settings through the RGB Gain and Offset adjustments, along with six (6) color hue and saturation adjustments.

While the color space settings give you access to the AdobeRGB and sRGB presets, and two (2) more calibration setting options you can use for optional hardware/software calibration solution. Other picture adjustment includes Aspect Ratio, Brightness, Contrast, and Picture-By-Picture (PBP) settings.

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q has all the I/O ports you need, with decent connectivity, albeit with one or two caveats. It comes with an HDMI version 1.4 port (which means you can’t run the 3840 x 2160 native resolution, at 60Hz, only at 30Hz. It also has DisplayPort (which allows you to view UHD content at 60Hz if the Graphics Card supports Multi-Stream Transport) and a Mini DisplayPort, a one (1) USB 3.0 upstream port and three (3) USB 3.0 downstream ports. The left side of the cabinet houses the embedded 6-in-1 card reader.

Solid and Fully Adjustable Stand for Viewing Convenience and Ergonomics with VESA Mount Option

(Image from Amazon)

The silver stand provides solid and secured support of the 10.5 lbs., cabinet. It occupies relatively small space, and it’s thin frame leaves you more space on your desk. The best thing about this stand is it is fully adjustable for all your ergonomic needs. You can adjust the height of your display, tilt and swivel the screen or even pivot to switch from landscape to portrait orientation. Also, the monitor supports automatic auto-rotation, meaning, it changes orientation for you when you switch between landscape and portrait.

If you wish to have a better and more flexible adjustment in your workspace, then you can opt for LCD monitor arm through its VESA-compatible mounting holes. You can also mount this display on your wall through LCD monitor wall mount, great for gaming and home theater setups. Package also comes with an optional mounting kit for your convenience.

Decent Power Consumption

Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q performs in high-quality and is packed with features and functionalities, which generally mean you can’t expect it to be as energy efficient as most 24-inch displays in the market today. As a matter of fact, this display consumes 62 watts at Standard mode, which is significantly higher than its closest 4K counterpart NEC EA244UHD, which is only at 48 watts. Also, this Dell monitor doesn’t come with any Eco mode presets, while its Energy-Saving mode is limited at disabling the USB ports and turning the power LED off.

Tech Specs

Package includes a mini-DisplayPort cable, an upstream USB cable, and a resource CD containing drivers and a user guide.

Bottom Line

With a relatively reasonable price tag, excellent color accuracy and grayscale performance, and fully adjustable and ergonomic stand, Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q certainly deserves all the good reviews the monitor is receiving from its users. This monitor displays stunning 3,840-by-2,160 imagery, with great colors and light and dark grays. It comes with plenty of picture settings and is well-equipped with connectivity options that future-proofs your computer.

It has its drawbacks of course, such as the lack of side mount for the USB port, underwhelming 800:1 contrast ratio, and black level is a bit of a mediocre. These shortcomings however, are quite forgivable, especially if you don’t really care about Full HD video-viewing and multimedia works, (though a legitimate issue for many users). It’s a good option for anyone planning to revamp their workstation with dual monitor LCD arms or LCD monitor wall mounts

All in all, it is quite a fantastic LCD monitor that is a little bit ahead of its time in terms of OS support and GPU. But if you’re looking for a decent and good-priced 4K monitor at a price that won’t hurt the bank, then the Dell UltraSharp UP2414Q is best available bet.
