In the past couple of years, curved-screen TVs and computer monitors have generated a lot of hype. While many experts were pessimistic, many consumers bought the hype and jumped to the bandwagon, thinking they just bought the best screen for their money.
The Problem with Curved Screen TVs
Sure enough, curved screens really present incredible picture, with stunningly clear and immersive viewing experience when viewing straight at the center of the screen. Almost like a 3D kind of viewing. But then again, you have to sit exactly front the screen and sit at the center to experience the benefits of the curved screen, or you will suffer from glares, and reflections, and slightly distorted images, especially on both sides of the curve. Basically, you can’t sit on the couch with multiple viewers, as many of you will be visually screwed. The screen only looks more distorted the more you sit off to the side. Experts say you may need very large TV models, somewhere around 70 inches or larger, to really get the concept of curved screen work. Anything smaller than that may cause the vibrancy, and the immersion the curve promises is just not as compelling. Also, the curve frame doesn’t let you hang the TV on the wall like a flat-screen TV, as the sides would veer off from the flat wall, making it look awkward.
The Advantage of Curved Screen Computer Monitor
The problems with curved screen TVs were diminished in computer monitor, as users will be sitting directly in front and closer to the screen. The curved panel will wrap around the user’s field of vision, gently making it more immersive. This means you can see thoroughly all the details you want to see, especially on larger screens, such as ultrawide curved screen monitor (29 to 35 inches models), which are larger than the typical computer monitor. Users won’t need to hang it on the wall, nor worry of other viewers’ viewing angle.
The challenge of course, is the hefty price tag that often comes with utlrawide curved screen monitors. Majority of 32 to 34-inch curved monitors in the market today have prices of over $1000. With that same amount of money, you can purchase two monitors and put them side-by-side for dual monitor setup. But then again, curved screen monitor is a luxury purchase, and an investment you would want to make for particular tasks.
