Who is it for?

If you’re looking for an affordable all-around multimedia monitor for work and home use, then you have lots of choices out there. One of good the choices you can consider is the Viewsonic VX2858Sml, a product that doesn’t come with bells and whistles to impress, but delivers the job well without the hefty price tag.

The Viewsonic VX2858Sml is designed for entertainment and multimedia applications. And though it doesn’t have the bells and whistles to impress you or beat its competition, it comes equipped with the important ones for all-around use. It works at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution, at 16:9 widescreen ratio.

Adequate Color Accuracy and Good Grayscale Performance for Daily Use

Despite of its cheap price tag and hardware limitations, the Viewsonic VX2858Sml is still able to produce respectable color accuracy, good for everyday use. All red, green and blue colors may be a little off from their ideal coordinates (based on Chromaticity test), but it doesn’t cause any serious effect to the display. Blue is a little closer, though a little off from the ideal. These little inaccuracies in color don’t cause color tinting. But if you’re going to work on your computer, and needs serious color accuracy performance, such as graphics, photo editing, or other color-sensitive contents, then you might want to look somewhere else. If you’re just going to use the monitor for everyday use, such as working on documents, spreadsheets, playing some games, watching some movies, etc., this Viewsonic multimedia display is good enough to suffice.

In terms of grayscale performance, the VX2858Sml does quite well, based on DisplayMate 64-Step Gray-Scale test. The darkest gray shades are dark enough, a little inferior compared to its fellow VA-panel based monitor BenQ EW2740L. The light gray shades however, are displayed nicely, with highlights in details looking sharp.

Dual HDMI Inputs with MHL Connectivity for Full HD Connectivity and Easy Connectivity with Your Mobile Devices

(image from Amazon)

This display comes with the highest, future-proof video standard at HDMI, guaranteed for the best digital picture clarity. It has two (2) HDMI inputs, allowing you to connect different devices and workstation peripherals and entertainment systems, such as laptop PCs, Blu-ray players, gaming consoles, digital cameras, and various devices that requires true high-definition to enjoy.

(image from Amazon)

Aside from the two HDMI ports also functions as MHL ports, which means you can easily connect your compatible mobile devices to your PC through the monitor. It’s a great way to see your data files from smartphones and tablets directly on the bigger screen, in Full HD resolution, while simultaneously charge their batteries.

SuperClear Pro Technology for Rich Colors and with True 8-bit Performance

(image from Amazon)

As said earlier, the Viewsonic VX2858Sml monitor doesn’t come with a lot of bells and whistles, but it does come with the most important ones for general use, such as the SUperClear Pro technology. This feature gives the monitor richer colors, sharper images and better color gradients.

(image from Amazon)

Pair that with the true 8-bt color performance that’s able to show 16.7 million undistorted colors and superior static contrast ratio of of 3000:1 and a 50M:1 MEGA Dynamic Contrast Ratio, and your screen gets improved clarity and stunning visuals.

With Flicker-free Technology and Blue Light Filter to Help Take Care of Your Eyes and for More Comfortable Viewing

(image from Amazon)

As an all-around monitor, the VX2858Sml comes equipped with comfortable-viewing features, namely the brand’s Flicker-free technology and Blue Light Filter.

Instead of using Pulse Width Modulation that turns its LED light on and off, this monitor uses DC modulation backlight for its flicker-free technology, maintaining steady stream of current power and helps get rid of screen flicker at all brightness levels. This lets you work, watch movies, and play games on your computer without the risk of eyestrain.

The Blue Light Filter feature on the other hand, safeguards your eyes from exposure to harmful blue light, known to cause eye discomfort. This feature works by eliminating the screen’s emitted blue light, allowing you to work and enjoy your movies and games longer.

Decent Viewing-Angle Performance

The viewing-angle performance of this Viewsonic monitor is quite fair (176°/176°), though obviously not as good as most IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels out there. Still, it’s a little better than what you get in most TN-based panels. Black starts to look a little lighter when viewing the screen from extreme side angles, but there are not loss of luminance or obvious color shifting.

Reasonable Pixel Response and Input Lag for All-Around Use

Viewsonic VX2858Sml’s pixel response is at 6m gray-to-gray, which may be far from the ideal. There will be few minor artifacts when playing big action-packed titles like Aliens vs. Predator, but not enough to cause serious issue or become a deal breaker. The same goes with the input lag, as it measures 27.2ms (based on Leo Bodnar Video Signal Lag Tester), which means there may be some lag between your commands in the monitor and the monitor’s action. But then again, it’s decent enough for most all-around use, especially if you’re using the monitor for work purposes, such as working on word files, spreadsheets, browsing through websites, working on various apps, etc.

Great Power Saver

(image from Amazon)

Like its tightest competition Acer H276HL, the VX2858Sml doesn’t consume a lot of power. It uses only 29 watts at Standard Eco mode and can even pull it down to 20 watts at Conserve Eco mode. To compare, Acer H276HL works at 24 watts in Standard mode and 22 watts in Eco mode, while BenQ EW2740L uses 34 watts at Standard mode and 23 watts at Eco mode.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

As an affordable all-around monitor, it is easy to enjoy two Viewsonic VX2858Sml sitting side-by-side for dual monitor setups.  Though it doesn’t come with the bells and whistles you can expect from its expensive counterparts, it does provide lots of good multimedia functions that make it great for dual monitor or even triple monitor setups.

(image from Amazon)

The Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm is easily one of the best choices out there for dual monitor setup. It comes equipped with the brand’s own Constant Force technology, with both arms fully adjustable. It’s made with high quality materials, solid construction, with nicely polished aluminum to fit nicely to any environment.  It adjusts easily, with one simple touch, and still keep the display stable and secured in place.

If you want to use this monitor as a standalone display, then there is the Ergotron LX Wall Mount LCD Arm. It offers the same adjustability, flexibility, and versatility as other Ergotron products.

Design and Features

(image from Amazon)

The Viewsonic VX2858Sml has the same cabinet design as Viewsonic VS2880ml. Both models sports 2-inch thick matte black cabinet, 3/4-inch glossy black bezel, and a glossy black speaker grille underneath the bottom bezel. The only difference between the two is the stand, as the former sports a glossy black wedge-shaped stand, compared to the latter’s silver V-shaped stand.

The 1920x1080p panel is coated with a semi-gloss coating, which is a little reflective.

Buttons and Functions

Underneath the speaker grill are the four (4) touch-sensitive function buttons of this display, namely p arrow, down arrow, 1 and 2, and a Power Switch. The switch glows blue which indicates video signal, it glows amber when the signal is lost.

The buttons are designed to navigate the monitor’s Menu settings, where you can make the appropriate display settings for your liking, including Brightness, Color Temperature and Contrast. There are also three (3) Eco Modes, which are all basic, namely (Standard, Optimize and Conserve) and another six (6) Picture Presets, namely Standard, Web, Text, Game, Movie and Mono. Fortunately for users who work a lot of hours in front of their computer, this Viewsonic multimedia monitor comes equipped with a Blue Light Filter, which helps reduce the risk of eyestrain.

I/O Ports

(image from Amazon)

The back side of the cabinet houses the two (2) HDMI ports, which also supports MHL connectivity. Meaning, you can easily connect your smartphone, tablet, or various gadgets to the monitor, charge, transfer files, and view content in the larger screen.

There is also a VGA video input, audio input, and a headphone jack. Unfortunately, this Viewsonic monitor doesn’t come with USB ports or media card slots, which would have been really convenient for office use.

Moderately Loud 2-Watt Speakers

Hiding in the VX2858Sml’s grille are the two (2) moderately loud 2-watt speakers. There’s not much to expect from these speakers, as they sound tinny when cracked up and obvious lacks in bass. However, they are really convenient add-ons for your workstation, as it saves you from the hassles of dealing with work desk clutter most external speakers make. Also, it’s a good treat for playing games and watching movies in your computer.

Sturdy Stand, But with Limited Adjustability, with VESA Mount

(image from Amazon)

The Viewsonic VX2858Sml features a glossy black wedge-shaped stand that allows tilt adjustments. Users can tilt the screen for 5° forward and 20 backward. It is pretty sturdy and provides good support for the huge screen. However, it doesn’t allow any more adjustments than tilt. You can’t swivel, adjust in height or pivot the screen.

(image from Amazon)

It does however, comes with 100x100mm VESA mounting holes, which means you can always pair it with third-party ergonomic products such as fully adjustable desk stands, and wall mounts for more ergonomic setup, or even have dual monitor or multiple monitor setups.

Tech Specs

The box comes with the Viewsonic VX2858Sml monitor, a resource CD with drivers and a user guide, an HDMI-to-MHL cable, a VGA cable, and an audio cable.

Bottom Line

The Viewsonic VX2858 doesn’t have the bells and whistles to wow you, and it’s not a top performer either. What it has is good image quality with sharp HD imagery for the wide and spacious 28-inch screen that comes with a very affordable price tag. With that said, this monitor lacks the cool features you can find from its expensive counterparts, such as USB ports, card reader, fully adjustable stand, and a powerful speaker for better multimedia experience (though it does come with a 2-watt speakers). Performance wise, its black could be darker as well.

All in all, the Viewsonic VX2858 offers good all-around performance, with the speakers and dual HDMI inputs for easy and convenient connectivity to your other important mobile devices.
