ViewSonic XG2700; An In-Depth Review

In the past few years, we are bound to a couple of choices when choosing computer displays – working type or gaming type. While the lines that separate the two have been blurred today (thanks to versatile monitors) many products are still coined for specific purpose. As 4K gaming grows in popularity for PC gaming, ViewSonic saw the opportunity to jump straight into the fire fight and released their 4K gaming monitor in the name ViewSonic XG2700 – a well-equipped 27-inch monitor with impressive screen uniformity from its IPS panel, responsive gaming panel and AMD FreeSync tech equipped. What makes this monitor a good gaming display? Check out this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide and find out.

Who is it for?

If you’re an avid gamer who’s looking to play your favorite games in 4K, then you should definitely take a look at ViewSonic XG2700.  While many monitors struggle to deliver decent gaming performance at 4K, this display is one of the very few monitors in the market today that could actually deliver 4K resolution that works pretty well for gaming. Plus, it’s a fantastic choice for AMD graphic card owners, as it comes with the AMD FreeSync technology.

Benefits

Can this monitor beat its rivals in the market? The short answer for that would be yes. The ViewSonic XG2700 is specifically aimed at gamers. However, unlike most gaming monitors, this display is no one-trick pony, it’s also a good display for anyone who wants to have (and work on) a great looking display for professional, color-sensitive and performance demanding tasks, such as editing photos and videos. Also, it’s jam-packed with great features for both gaming and work purposes.

Impressively Good Image Quality at 4K

ViewSonic XG2700 (image from Amazon)

For its factory settings, image quality is pretty decent for this ViewSonic monitor. Initial brightness level is at 341 nits, which is perhaps too bright for most users, and there’s a little to choose between the contrast ratio of 1217:1 and 1012:1.

Colour quality is middling, averaging a Delta E of 2.33, which doesn’t compare particularly well to its close rival Asus ROG Swift PG27AQ. Colour Temperature on the other hand, is top notch at 6397K.

Dropping brightness level to 150 nits however, improve the scores dramatically – you get more realistic figures which more people could actually use, which is 42/100 for the ViewSonic’s on-screen display. The contrast ratio drops a tad to 1153:1, but that also results to a black level of 0.13 nits, this means better overall results, which is also better than the Asus’. At 150 nits, the Colour Temperature is at 6524K, which is pretty close to its key 6500K than Asus’ 6678K.

In many key departments, such as black level, and contrast, ViewSonic XG2700 beats Asus. With ViewSonic only falling behind in few areas, and even then, the difference is marginal. Delta E is at 0.56 for ViewSonic, which is excellent. Asus managed to score 0.1, which is exceptional. ViewSonic’s Gamma is at 2.24, which is decent, and only a little behind the ROF Swift. For sRGB colour gamut, ViewSonic scored 98.8%, while Asus scored 99.2%.

These differences are fine margins, with ViewSonic leading in some areas, such as black level, contrast, and colour temperature. Asus on the other hand, wins in colour accuracy, gamma and gamut department. It’s quite tricky to pick a winner, and realistically, most gamers will not notice the tiny differences between these two excellent panels.

As expected, the SuperClear IPS Panel Technology brings in accurate and more vivid colors with consistent level of brightness; this means the monitor keeps the same level of image quality in all angles, whether it’s from above, below, or the side.

Gaming with Stunning Imagery

As said earlier, this ViewSonic gaming monitor uses IPS panel, which of obviously came with stunning imagery. Provided your rig can handle the 4K resolution, you’d definitely get excellent showpiece in this display as it runs games in Ultra HD resolution, highlighting games with more impressive and more immersive details, such as superb lighting, exploding structures, and realistic hair effects in games like Rise of the Tomb Raider.

This monitor also runs at 144Hz Refresh Rate, and though Response Time is pretty average for gaming at 5ms, the high Refresh Rate optimizes the screen for smoothness in competitive and highly demanding games. Running, jumping, tumbling and shooting in your favorite FPS games feels really good in its quick and responsive performance, which of course, is the key for any game where a single shot is what separates winning and losing.

The same responsiveness is translated into arcade and fighting games such as in Street Fighter V. Intricate combos will not be affected by any Input Lag issues, as there will be no Input Lag issues. Game looks rich and vibrant.

AMD FreeSync As A Screen Tearing Solution

AMD FreeSync is meant to eliminate the screen tearing, which usually happens in games. Of course, this tech only works for computer rigs with AMD graphics card. Though some games can run smoothly without needing the FreeSync, many games (especially bib title games) actually needs this feature to run it smoothly. The monitor looks pretty decent even without activating the FreeSync. However, there are of course some rare instances where stuttering can be found. Activating the FreeSync helped, but it didn’t really do a lot, to be honest. Quickly looking up and down in games like Rainbow Six Seige showed some occasional tearing, and FreeSync didn’t really fix the issue. However, after making some tweaks in in-game settings, everything smoothened out. It’s a minor inconvenience, but definitely one worth noting.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

As with many 27-inch gaming display in the market today, ViewSonic XG2700 comes with a fully-adjustable monitor stand. If that's still not enough for you, then you can make good use of its VESA-compliant mounting holes and use aftermarket monitor stands with articulating arms for better versatility and ergonomics, and of course, for dual monitor setup.

For dual monitor setup, there are a couple of good options, the Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm and  AmazonBasics dual side-by-side monitor arm.

The Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm is a premium dual monitor mount option from one of the world's leading names in ergonomics. It can support two 27-inch monitors simultaneously, and can even hold one display on top of the other. It is made up of solid polished aluminum construction and high quality materials. Each arm can be adjusted independently, allowing users to reposition their display; up, down, forward and back, with one simple touch, and still keep the displays secured and stable in place, as it also comes with the patented Constant Force (CF) technology.

AmazonBasics dual side-by-side monitor arm on the other hand, works almost exactly the same. It's the more affordable option and it is fully capable of delivering quality performance.

Design and Features

ViewSonic XG2700 (image from Amazon)

Design wise, ViewSonic XG2700 isn’t particularly an eye candy. Besides, ViewSonic typically not known for stunningly designed computer monitors. It looks utilitarian, as with most workhorse does; bezels are wide and deep, which can be a little too distracting from the panel for some users. The plastic body looks cheap, but generally it looked practical.

Buttons and Controls

Buttons for this monitor are positioned at the front. Unfortunately, these touch-sensitive controls are poorly labeled, making its OSD (on-screen display) quite difficult to use. It seriously does take some learning curve to navigate through the menu without accidentally hitting the wrong buttons. On the plus side though, the OSD is quite comprehensive and comes with lots of options to tweak your display. The menu looks basic, which helps, as there are tons of options to choose from. There is however, a hotkey switch between display inputs and user-defined screen modes, while the main menu comes with lots of options to choose from; including view modes and multi-picture settings to advanced options such as input lag alterations and black stabilization.

Adjustments include all the basics, such as contrast, brightness, and colour (sRGB, hue, saturation, and offset). You can also adjust sharpness and response time and access the settings for sRGB, dynamic contrast, overscan, multi-picture, blue light filter, input lag mode, black stabilization and turn the FreeSync On and Off. As you can see, the last few choices are for tweaking your display to get the best setting for your gaming, or at least, your preferences.

Connectivity Options

As for your choices for connectivity, you will have three HDMI ports (2 MHL, 1 HDMI 2.0), one DisplayPort and one mini-DisplayPort. Also, you will get three USB 3.0 ports to conveniently hookup your gadgets, and charge your smartphone on your desk through this monitor. For audio, there’s the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Sturdy Stand with Complete Adjustability for Ergonomics, Plus VESA Mounting Holes

ViewSonic XG2700 (image from Amazon)

This product comes in fully assembled, with stand already attached, with base screws in easily enough. The basic and straightforward stand is sturdy, as expected for utilitarian-looking monitors such as this. But as any other good gaming display, it does provide wide range of adjustments for versatility and comfort; it can tilt, swivel, adjust in height and rotate to let you switch from landscape to portrait orientation and vice versa. This means users of any size and preference can easily find the right angle of setup for this display.

Also, if you still think the fully-adjustable stand isn’t enough, or if you want to place two monitor side-by-side for a dual monitor setup, you can always go for aftermarket monitor stands and make use of the VESA-compliant mounting holes at the back side of the cabinet.

Tech Specs

Bottom Lines

All in all, ViewSonic XG2700 is a fantastic display for gaming enthusiasts who wants to experience how it is like to play in 4K. The panel technology is exceptional (as expected) in both colour accuracy and responsiveness. It’s easily one of the most compelling displays out there today; screen uniformity is also unbelievably good in sRGB mode. Even without sRGB mode being activated, the panel can compete at some of the best in the market.

As with most monitors out there, this one also has its flaws. For one, the design is in no way attractive, rather, it looks utilitarian, suggesting it’s all about performance. Also, the touch-sensitive buttons are a difficult to use. Despite these minor setbacks, anyone looking for a good all-around display would be willing to put up with this monitor simply for its performance.

It’s neck and neck with its close rival Asus PG27AQ, but ViewSonic beats its Asus competition in crucial areas, as it squeezes more features and more connectors and USB ports. It may not look as good as the Asus, and it may be heavier, but these are minor concerns.

ViewSonic XG2700 may be expensive, but it easily justifies its price as it got it where it really counts. The 4K resolution is amped by the AMD FreeSync, and comes with tons of game-friendly features, and again, excellent image quality. It’s definitely the best choice out there for 4K gaming.
