Early this year, ViewSonic revealed its new line of high-performance gaming monitors, which is quite an extensive selection ranging from Full HD 1080p to 4K Ultra HD. Also, each selection comes with two varieties of NVIDIA G-Sync and AMD FreeSync technology. If you’re a gamer, then you definitely know how these technologies can make your gaming experience better by eliminating screen tearing and stuttering, making way for smoother gaming performance. One the selection is actually a budget multimedia monitor that is also great for gamers – the ViewSonic VX2457-mhd. What makes this display great? Know more about it in this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide.

Who is it for?

The ViewSonic VX2457-mhd is aimed for hardcore gamers looking for affordable gaming monitor to pair with their AMD graphics card, as it supports the AMD FreeSync technology for smoother and tearing-free gaming.

Benefits

Fast Refresh Rate and Response Time and Low Input Lag for Faster, Smoother Gaming Experience

The ViewSonic VX2457-mhd runs at 75Hz Refresh Rate, which is a step better than the standard 60Hz that comes with most monitors. Also, it’s paired with 2ms Gray-to-Gray Response Time, which is a only little shy from the fastest recorded response time in the market. This means this gaming monitor has no problem running big title action-packed FPS and racing games with smoother and more responsive gameplay experience.

Input Lag is also quite low, which is particularly impressive for fast-paced games. That’s aside from the ‘Low Input Mode’ on its OSD (on-screen display), which when activated, significantly reduces input lag. However, this feature can’t be used simultaneously with faster Response Time, which is a bit odd.

But then again, ‘faster’ Response Time option can caused noticeable ghosting, which means you’re better off enabling the Low Input Lag mode and set your Response Time to Standard.

There’s also the Black Stabilization feature for heightened visibility, great for darker scenes, especially for competitive FPS games.

Average Color Performance, As Expected with Most Gaming Displays

ViewSonic VX2457-mhd scored 98% sRGB colour space and 77% AdobeRGB colour space, the former digits are good, while the latter is definitely mediocre. Delta E average however, is impressive, garnering a score of 0.95 (the lower score, the better), which means users will be able to see color accurately. This makes this ViewSonic gaming monitor also good for looking at photos and videos, or even working (editing) on them with colours, as colors don’t appear washed out.

Good Brightness and Great Contrast Ratio to Make Colors Pop Up More

Despite the average color performance, the ViewSonic VX2457-mhd is able to get good scores in Brightness level output of 265cd/m2. That is paired with a great contrast ratio of 1050:1. This means all color levels of black and white are well represented; blacks are darker, while whites appear whiter, no traces of yellow tints. These characteristics make colors appear even better, making images pop up more on its screen.

Mediocre Viewing Angle

As with other monitors with TN-based panels, the ViewSonic VX2457-mhd has a mediocre viewing angle. This means you need to sit (or stand) directly in front of the screen to see all the colours without noticeable shifting. This viewing angle limitation also affects small texts written under icons, where blueish colors easily shine through pure black text.

With AMD FreeSync Technology for More Immersive Gaming Experience

As predicted, the AMD FreeSync technology us impressive. When enabled (of course, used alongside with an AMD graphics card to synchronize the display) it maximizes the 75Hz refresh rate by reducing screen tearing, giving games noticeable smoother look.

Also, it is important to note that ViewSonic VX2457-mhd also works with computers with Nvidia and AMD graphics card that don’t support FreeSync, but it won’t synchronize the same way, and you can’t maximize its potential.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Mounting Options

ViewSonic made sure gamers will have a convenient time matching their ViewSonic VX2457-mhd with a better third party ergonomic solution , such as monitor stands with articulating arm, or for dual monitor or triple monitor gaming setup, as its cabinet comes with 100x100mm VESA mounting holes.

Two of the better options out there for dual monitors setup are the Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm and Tyke Supply Dual LCD Monitor Stand Desk Clamp.

Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm comes with two articulating arms that are fully adjustable and provide smooth and convenient adjustments for dual monitor setup. It also allows you to place one screen on top of the other. It is made up of high quality materials, and comes with Constant Force technology feature for stable and secured hold of the screen, while allowing easy adjustments.

Tyke Supply Dual LCD Monitor Stand Desk Clamp is the cheaper option. It is very sturdy and stable. It doesn’t offer any much adjustability as compared to mounts with articulating arm, but it's a dependable support for dual monitors, which is something every gamer really needs.

Design and Features

The sizes of the bezels are average, not too thick but not thin either. The curved plastic power light adds style to the monitor’s front look, but you can always turn it off if you don’t like. The screen is coated with a matte finish, preventing reflections and blocking glares, keeping them from distracting you as you play or work on ViewSonic VX2457-mhd.

Buttons and Controls

Buttons of ViewSonic VX2457-mhd are located at the back right hand side of the cabinet. They feel awkwardly placed and they’re not clearly labeled. Rather, they are denoted with Up and Down arrow, 1, 2 and game logo.

The buttons however, are simple to use. They feel intuitive and quickly change the settings you want to change, adjust brightness, contrast, volume, etc. Also, it provides easy access to Game Mode.

In its OSD is an extensive list of options, including ability to set and adjust colors red, green and blue levels, change the screen’s sharpness levels, adjust the blue-light filter, enable low-input lag and lower the response time. Obviously, the last three features are dedicated for gaming, as they allow gamers to play longer hours without hurting their eyes, while maintaining that smooth gaming experience.

I/O Ports

The Inputs/Outputs connectors of ViewSonic VX2457-mhd are all housed at the backside of the cabinet. This includes the HDMI, DisplayPort and VGA connections. Also included is the auxiliary 3.5mm input and output. Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with DVI connection, but most people don’t see this as a problem, even for gamers.

The other side of the selection of I/O ports is for the PSU style Power Cord.

Average Stand Feels Wobbly and Very Limited Adjustments

The stand features a glossy plastic base, which definitely looks nice. However, it’s a magnet for fingerprints.  Also, the stand doesn’t have the best build quality to support the cabinet and keep it stable. It feels wobbly, and easily wobbles when you press the buttons to adjust your settings.

The stand offers tilt movement adjustments. But that’s pretty much it. There is height adjustment and pivot available. This is unfortunate, considering most gaming monitors out there come with fully adjustable stand.

The silver ring at the base comes with a cable management clip.

VESA Standard Mounting Holes

ViewSonic VX2457-mhd (image from Amazon)

It does however, comes with VESA-compliant mounting holes (100x100m), which means you can easily mount it to third-party ergonomic solution such as monitor stands with articulating arm or wall mounts for more ergonomic setup. Or better yet, use it for dual monitor or triple monitor setup.

With a Pair of Integrated Speakers

More and more gaming displays now come with built-in speakers, which are quite handy, especially if you’re saving precious desk space. But as predicted, the speakers are no way impressive; they’re definitely just meant for Windows sound. If you want better sound quality when playing your games or watch your movies, then you’re better off with quality external speakers, or quality headphones.

Tech Specs

Package includes the LCD Display, Power Cable, Audio Cable, VGA Cable, HDMI Cable, Quick Start Guide, ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM.

Bottom Line

The ViewSonic VX2457-mhd is undeniably one of the best budget gaming monitors out there. It’s definitely a good deal, especially if you’re a gamer who don’t want to spend thousands of dollars on a display. Also, it has the perfect size for dual monitor or triple monitor setup, should you wish to have a more immersive gaming setup.

The piano black finish may make it look average, but then again, that depends on the person seeing the display.

It lacks the DisplayPort cable, which would have been a great addition for high resolution video with better audio quality. But most gamers would prefer plugging their external speakers to the computer, rather than their monitor.

It can handle all games with ease, especially if your computer comes with an AMD-enabled FreeSync graphics card. Colour accuracy is surprisingly good, considering it’s a TN-based panel display. Of course, viewing angle falls short, as with most monitors of the same panel technology. Pair this monitor with a Radeon R9 (or higher) and you get excellent gaming experience past the standard 60Hz refresh rate.
