ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W; An In-Depth Review

Smaller IPS panel monitor has been a growing trend in monitor industry for the past couple of years now, and now, more and more people are actually embracing it. And why not when these displays typically offer great value with monitors that provides excellent colour accuracy and coverage. ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W is a good example – it’s a 23-inch IPS panel monitor with an affordable, if not cheap price. It’s by no means perfect, but it’s pretty impressive considering the limitations of its size, and its cheap price tag. What makes this monitor a good display to consider? Check out this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide to know more.

Who is it for?

This monitor is for people looking for IPS display with the cheap price tag. Sounds too good to be true, but it actually is - ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W is a small display with the basic functionalities of an affordable monitor, but has the ever amazing picture quality of In-Plane Switching panel.

Benefits

Smaller IPS monitors offer great value, they typically come with excellent colour accuracy and coverage, and this is what this 23-inch ViewSonic IPS monitor is about – pleasing pictures in Full HD resolution. The 1080p resolution may not make images jump off the screen, but it’s beautiful enough to impress.

Pleasing Pictures for Less

As said earlier, image quality in the ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W is excellent; slightly paler shades from test images even look relatively vibrant on its screen, while brighter colors pop out easily. Thanks to the monitor’s great sRGB colour gamut performance at 93.5%.

Based on calibrator, colour accuracy is also impressive for its price, with only minor deviations between what the monitor was asked to display and what appear on screen. The only stumbling block for it is the bright red, which were off (looing slightly darker than it’s supposed to). Unfortunately, there’s no increasing for the colour accuracy of the monitor through the calibration, which means its out-of-the-box performance is its peak setting.

For the contrast ratio, this monitor scored 1135:1, which is just about right for a monitor of its price. Some details for exceptionally challenging images are lost, with just one shade of black (rather than many).

Viewing angles excellent, typical for IPS panels; 178˚ allows you to see the monitor from extreme angles without too much distortion. Some slight blue tinges may appear from extreme angles, but screen remains clear with objects and texts still kept intact.

For the backlight across the screen, it’s mostly even, with a little difference from both sides.

Impressive Gaming Performance

Though not advertised as a gaming display, ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W is actually great at gaming, as it runs at 2ms Response Time (GTG). Most IPS panels that claim have improved gaming capabilities top at 5ms Response Time. Those who don’t have the gaming capabilities are at 12ms, which is just too slow.

The 2ms Response Time means this ViewSonic display don’t have any problems running big title games; no ghosting while playing action-packed games like Witcher 3, CS: GO, etc. Considering that this monitor uses IPS panel. Refresh Rate is typical at 60Hz, which is pretty decent.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Mounting Options

Mid-sized monitors such as 23-inch and 24-inch are ideal choices for dual monitor and triple monitor setups. If you're looking to double or triple your resolution by putting two or three of this monitor side-by-side, or accompany your existing display with this monitor and have a better setup, then you can ditch the monitor stands and opt for a third-party solution. Two of the best choices out there come from Ergotron and Amazon Basics.

Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm (image from Amazon)

Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm allows you to put two displays of up to 28-inch display side by side, or even put one on top of the other. It is made up of solid polished aluminum construction, with high quality materials. It’s equipped with Constant Force (CF) technology, which is Ergotron’s patented technology that holds monitors securely in place, and still allows smooth, convenient adjustment for optimum ergonomics.

If you’re looking for a dual monitor LCD arm that can support your two 27-inch monitor, but don’t have the budget to spend for premium products, then you can opt for AmazonBasics dual side-by-side monitor arm. This product comes with an affordable price tag, but don’t mistake its price for low quality, as it can certainly stand against the best in the market today.

For triple monitor setup, you can check out XFX Triple Display Monitor Stand

This triple display monitor stand is aimed for gamers looking for a panoramic triple display setup. It requires a fair amount of assembly, but once setup fully, it provides respectable support with good adjustability, perfect for both gaming and work PCs. Aesthetically speaking, it's one of the better looking monitor stands out there.

Design and Features

ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W (image from Amazon)

Since it’s smaller, this ViewSonic IPS monitor comes with relatively cheap price tag compared to top of the line IPS monitors in the market. It’s even cheaper than Iiyama's XU2390HS-B1.

The monitor comes in a white plasticky and glossy cabinet, which is pretty interestingly unique from what we’ve been used to. It comes in a frameless design, which gives the screen a classy and clean look.

The plastic bezel is measures only 1mm, which is extremely thin by itself; although there is a 1cm black frame around the top and side bezels when you turn on the screen. Though it doesn’t make any different on how images look on screen, we definitely don’t want to see that there, especially considering that the color of the cabinet is white. The bezels are definitely thinner than most screens in the market, which makes it easy and convenient to get two or three of this unit to sit side-by-side for dual monitor or multiple monitor setups.

Buttons and Controls

This monitor uses physical buttons instead of touch controls. The latter have become quite popular in newer monitor models, but they’re quire a pain to use. The 5 physical buttons for this ViewSonic monitor on the other hand, proved that tested-and-proven designs are still the most convenient to use, since they’re easy to handle.

For the Preset options, ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W has all the basic things you could ask for, such as Contrast-enhancing Game mode, and settings for movies, text, web browsing, and even a mono setting.

Connectivity Options

For connectivity options, the I/O ports of VX2363mhl-W are located at the back side of the panel, as with other monitors. The selections include a VGA input, two HDMI ports (with one being MHL-compatible, meaning you can hook up your devices to charge and open on the monitor). Unfortunately there is no DVI port in this product. For audio, there’s the good old 3.5mm audio input. Ports are downward facing, which means you can easily push the monitor to the wall.

There is also no internal power supply, as this ViewSonic has provided it with an external power brick.

With a Pair of Built-In Speaker

More and more displays now come with integrated speakers, which are welcome addition, since most of them are decent enough for basic use, such as listening to music while working, or watching movies on your desk and streaming videos online. While most integrated speakers are at 2W, ViewSonic took a step back on this model, as they only provided it with a pair of 1.5W speakers. As expected, it quality is inferior, sounds tinny and lacks the bass. But then again, if you’re serious about good audio quality, you would invest in a pair of quality external speakers.

White Stand, with Limited Adjustability, with VESA Mounting Holes Though

The shiny white base of the stand looks and feels cheap, and it even wobbles a little bit, something we can expect from a monitor of its size. There are no swivel adjustments, height adjustments, and pivot option, as the stand only allows the screen to tilt forward and backward.

Fortunately, ViewSonic provided it with VESA-compatible mounting holes, which means you can ditch the stand and opt for monitor stand with articulating arm, or stands for dual monitor or multiple monitor setups.

Tech Specs

Package includes the Power Cable, Adaptor, D-Sub Video Cable, HDMI cable, Audio cable, Quick Start Guide, ViewSonic Wizard CD-ROM. Actual content of course, may differ from market to market.

Bottom Line

ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W is far from perfect; it has beautiful screen, but its functionalities and performance are pretty basic. They’re of course impressive, considering the price tag that it comes with.

The screen looks good, but it’s not designed for photo professionals. So if you’re serious about excellent IPS screen, then you might want to consider those top-of-the-line products, which of course, comes with hefty price tags.

The stand has limited adjustability, while the 1080p Full HD resolution looks pretty basic.

The cheap price and IPS panel are definitely this monitor’s biggest selling points – it may only be a 6-bit screen, but it’s more than capable of showing good images. Also, the 2ms response time is better than most expensive IPS monitors.

All in all, ViewSonic VX2363mhl-W offers a good value for your money, especially for those who want to experience the advantage of IPS panel without breaking their bank. It’s definitely a bargain.
