ViewSonic VP2780-4K; An In-Depth Review

ViewSonic has really become a staple name in computer monitor industry in the past couple of years, and its VP27 range continues to impress both critics and consumers as it effectively combines large IPS panel with good image quality, and pack their products with loads of features. All for reasonable, if not affordable price tag. The ViewSonic VP2780-4K takes a notch higher, as it packs 4K image quality, and targets the graphics professionals as it establish itself as a worthy professional-grade monitor.

Who is it for?

This display is designed for content developers, graphic designers, and for post-production work.  It’s a great professional-grade computer monitor that can double as gaming monitor or even for entertainment. It comes loaded with features, and its large 27-inch screen is good enough for stand-alone use in almost all types of professional use.

There are plenty of options out there for 27-inch moderately-priced monitors, and the ViewSonic VP2780-4K is easily one of the good options. It offers 3840 x 2160p resolution or 4K Ultra-High Definition (UHD), through IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel, along with an impressive set of features, such as the 10-bit color technology, and various important add-ons that makes work more convenient and efficient for professionals.

SuperClear IPS Technology in a 27-inch Ultra HD LED Monitor

Combining super clear IPS technology to a 27-inch panel with Ultra HD resolution, ViewSonic VP2780-4K is able to deliver stunning definition, crucial for color-critical applications. It sports 3840x2160 resolution, while the SuperClear IPS technology shows rich and vivid colors. It comes well-calibrated as well, as factory settings shows good chromaticity scores. Colors red, green and blue are closely aligned with their ideal coordinates, which results to rich and well-saturated colors. It delivers stunning image quality for color-critical applications.

Superb Color Accuracy

(image from Amazon)

This 10-bit monitor can display 1.07 billion colors and is pre-calibrated with Delta < = 2, providing superior color accuracy for graphic design, content creation, printing and various professional applications.

In terms of grayscale performance, we know that IPS panels can deliver dark blacks, which makes colors pop up with better color quality, providing exquisite shadow and highlight details for images and scenes. DisplayMate 64-Step Gray-Scale test shows this display can accurately and cleanly display each side of gray without showing signs of whitewashed whites or crushed blacks (when two or more shades of black appear the same). This makes excellent image quality, and small text look sharp and well-defined.

Showing more than 8 million pixels through high pixel density performance of 163 PPI, this monitor delivers stunning image detail and clarity, which results to lifelike images. That is 4 times more pixels than the Full HD resolution in 1080p monitors.

Decent Response Time for Games and Movies

(image from Amazon)

The ViewSonic VP2780-4K runs at 5ms (gray-to-gray) pixel response, which keeps motion artifacts in games to a minimum. It may be a far 1ms, which is what most gaming monitors have today, but it is decent enough to work smoothly for most games. Truly, this ViewSonic display is not designed for gaming, it can’t keep blurring in big title games like Crysis 3 in PC and Call of Duty: Black Ops in Xbox 360. Input lag is at 10.9 milliseconds, which is relatively low, pretty good for gaming, as there are no delays as you try to maneuver your way through obstacles or shoot your opponents in FPS games. It’s also pretty close to the best Input lag result from a dedicated gaming monitor, the BenQ XL2430T which runs at 9.5 milliseconds.

VESA Mount Capability

(image from Amazon)

This display supports VESA mounting options, with VESA mounting holes at the backside of the cabinet. This means you can take the panel out of its stand and use third-party mounting solutions such as desk mounts, wall mounts or stands with fully-articulating arm for better ergonomics.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitors Setup Options

(image from Amazon)

There aren’t many options available for dual monitor setup for monitors with the size of 27-inches and up. However, there are a couple of good options can make a huge difference in comfort and ergonomics. The Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm is probably the best option there is. It can sit two 27-inch monitors side-by-side (can support up to two 28-inch panels), and even allow dual monitor laptop setup. It is made up of solid polished aluminum construction, with high quality materials. It’s equipped with Constant Force (CF) technology, which is Ergotron’s patented technology that holds monitors securely in place, and still allows smooth, convenient adjustment for optimum ergonomics.

Should you decide to use ViewSonic VP2780-4K as a standalone monitor, then your best ergonomic option available is Ergotron LX Wall Mount LCD Arm. It comes with the same kind of construction and build quality as the dual side-by-side arm, adjustability, flexibility and versatility.

Design and Features

Nothing special about the design and build of ViewSonic VP2780-4K, it maintains the same kind of basic design of chassis and style as its predecessors, VP2770-LED and VP2765-LED. It sports a simple and sober frame of matte-black finish with relatively thing bezels of 0.75-inch. The 11.8 lbs. cabinet is supported by a three-legged stand assembly, providing the cabinet solid and stable support. The overall build quality of this display is good, it’s office-friendly and can easily match any workstation with its impressive versatility.

Buttons and Controls

The bottom bezel houses the five (5) touch-sensitive function buttons of this ViewSonic display, providing easy access to the Menu and select options, and powers the display on and off. The buttons however, can be finicky; they work well usually, but every now and then, you may experience unresponsiveness or too much sensitivity, and even a bit jumpy.

Controls provide access to Picture settings, which options includes all the basic ones you expect from good monitors, plus more advanced picture presets. Settings include Brightness, Contrast, and seven Picture presets (Bluish, sRGB, Cool, Warm, Native, User and EBU. The User setting lets you set the red, green and blue saturation levels.

EBU and Gamma Correction Presets

(image from Amazon)

EBU on the other hand, means European Broadcasting Union, a setting you can use for video production and editing. This allows the display to deliver broadcast-like color quality and stable imaging.

There are five (5) gamma presets and three ECO power-saving modes options, namely Standard, Optimize and Conserve, which ranges from Gamma 1.8 to Gamma 2.6. This optimizes color performance and contrast ratio. Both are very important functions for photography production, graphic design, video editing, and more.

However, this ViewSonic display lacks the 6-Axis Hue and 6-Axis Saturation settings, which are advanced settings some users may need for precise calibration. In which case, the ViewSonic VP2780-4K falls short against its top competitors NEC MultiSync PA322UHD and the Acer H257HU, and Acer S277HK. This ViewSonic monitor however, comes equipped with Blue Light Filter setting, which helps reduce the risk of eyestrain, quite a convenient feature for people working on their computers all day.

(image from Amazon)

Other settings include Multi-Picture (Picture-by-Picture or PBP and Picture-in-Picture or PiP modes), which are used for simultaneously viewing multiple streams. These multi-picture features are used for functionality, allowing more efficient multitasking through simultaneous viewing of up to four split windows.

Abundant Options of I/O Ports

(image from Amazon)

The ViewSonic VP2780-4K sports an abundant options for connectivity; the rear side of the cabinet holds the facing downward DisplayPort inputs (two inputs, one full size, one mini DisplayPort), an HDMI 2.0 port, two HDMI 1.4 ports, which can also charge your mobile devices, and compatible with MHL – (Mobile High Definition) devices. There are also three USB 3.0 ports (one upstream and two downstream), and a headphone hack. The right side of the cabinet holds the two additional USB 3.0 ports for versatile connectivity and entertainment.

Three-Legged Fully Adjustable Stand

(image from Amazon)

The three-legged stand is not only sturdy, it also provides full adjustability, including from 5.9 inches height adjustment range, 28° tilt (5° forward, 23° backward), swivel 120° and pivots 90° to switch from landscape to portrait mode, and vice versa. This stand ensures full ergonomic functionality, delivering maximum comfort and improved productivity.

Tech Specs

Package comes with a DisplayProt cable, MHL cable, HDMI cable, a USB cable, resource CD, a Quick Start guide, and a Color Calibration report..

Bottom Line

(image from Amazon)

ViewSonic VP2780-4K is undeniably a solid choice for most office and workstation setups, particularly for professionals looking for a high-end monitor with UHD performance, but don’t want to spend a fortune. This 27-inch display uses IPS panel, allowing it to deliver exceptional color quality, crisp and highly detailed UHD images, wide viewing angles, and good grayscale t performance. It is packed with features, including multiple high-speed video inputs, USB hubs, and the trusted ergonomic stand. It may not be as stylish as its other 27-inch competitors, such as the Acer S277HK, but it is well equipped to deliver the performance you can expect.

This product is best for people looking for a great tool for specialized work, such as photography, video editing, graphics design, or other pixel-demanding applications. All in all, the ViewSonic VP2780-4K justifies its price, and it’s pretty competitive in almost all departments.
