The Samsung S27B971D is the offspring of last year's S27B970V. It’s a high-performance powerhouse designed with professional-quality in mind. This new line of Samsung monitor is called Series 9 or S9, and the S27B971D is the flagship product of the line. Its striking resemblance to its predecessor gives consumers something to expect on – bold and vibrant colors, solid adjustable base and elegant design. This time however, Samsung switched from glossy coating to a non-reflective matte, dropped the edge-to-edge glass design to keep glares and reflection at minimum.

The Samsung Series 9 S27B971D is pre-calibrated right out-of-the-box, which explains its excellent color accuracy. Tests from CIE (International Commission on Illumination) chromaticity chart shows that colors red, blue and green are all in their respective points.

It also makes great Grayscale Performance the panel does a great job in showing swatches of light gray from DisplayMate 64-Step Grayscale test. The transition from gray to black seems sudden at the dark end though. However, colors still look sharp and well-detailed, as the picture remains bright even when viewed from extreme angles.

In terms of font quality, this PLS panel does a good job in making small fonts legible and well-defined. This monitor can display fonts as small as 5.3 points (the smallest on the Scaled Fonts Test) without problems.

Like many of its products, the Samsung S27B971D sports the same brushed-aluminum, chrome-trim style commonly found on most of its smartphones and laptops. It combines both function and elegance.

This 27-inch display sports 2560 x 1440 resolution, framed by textured black bezels capped off with a band of silver trim.

The chrome stand of Samsung Series 9 is made up of real sturdy metal. It keeps the whole thing stable and safe in place, keeping the display from wobbling. It also allows flexible adjustments to fit your viewing needs; it has 4 inches height adjustment and can tilt 17°. However, it doesn’t allow the display to swivel or rotate.

At first glance, you will notice the lack of connectivity options and USB ports of this monitor. But take a closer look of the base and you will see the nicely positioned inputs/outputs and USB ports. The base of the monitor has the HDMI, DVI and DisplayPort, alongside with the Power jack and USB port. The right side of the stand also holds two more USB 2.0 ports to accommodate your USB drives.

The HDMI port on the other hand, supports MHL or Mobile High-Definition Link technology, allowing you to connect the Samsung monitor to any compatible smartphones, tablets and other MHL peripherals. This also lets users enjoy the rich display images and compelling audio from Series 9 stereo speakers, while working with seamless integration.


Button-Free Controls

This Samsung S9 flagship monitor doesn’t have buttons, ports, or any LED indicators on its cabinet. Everything you need to adjust the picture and image settings are accessed through the base of the monitor. The OSD (on-screen display) controls are located and accessed through the touch-sensitive buttons of the base. They come with backlighting, making them easy to see and identify. The always-lit function however, can become a distraction in a dark room.

The OSD menu consist controls for Color, Picture, Size and Position, and Setup sub-menus. Picture settings include brightness, contrast, dynamic contrast, sharpness, and HDMI black level.

The Color menu of this Samsung monitor includes the basic five (5) modes, namely Standard, Cinema, sRGB, High bright, and Calibration. When used with the included Natural Color Expert software, the Calibration mode, allows users to save a custom color profile of their preference. This monitor doesn’t have an Adobe RGB mode though. Other settings include individual settings for adjusting colors Red, Green, and Blue intensity levels, a range of Color Temperature modes from 4,000K to 10,000K, and Gamma presets ranging from 1.6 to 2.7.

Obviously, because of controls are located on its base, this monitor can’t be mounted on a wall, nor to a monitor stand.


Low Power Consumption with More Energy Saving Options

This 27-inch monitor only use 43 watts of power on its Regular mode, while the Eco Saving option pulls its power consumption down by as much as 75% or 32 watts. The 50% setting allows it to consume 21 watts, but this setting can be too dim for some users. By far, Samsung monitor is one of the cost-efficient monitors of its kind in the market today.


Tech Specs

Package includes the DVI, DisplayPort, HDMI- MHL, and USB cables. It also comes with a user guide, the resource CD containing drivers, Natural Color Expert software, and a multi-screen utility that lets you to create multiple screen partitions.

The Samsung S27B971D is certainly not a budget monitor, but it also doesn’t belong with expensive-tier monitors in the market today. The perfect color and WQHD (2560 x 1440) native resolution, this monitor is touted as a graphic design display. And along with its sleek design and business-type port selection, with package containing all the accessories you need for a professional-grade monitor, the S27B971D is considered impressively fancy and is indeed, a little pricey than many of its competition.

This monitor feels like a cross between two different categories – one is that it is stylish and caters the high-end users at first glance, and two is the pre-calibrated picture quality with excellent color accuracy makes it a strong contender among the top-tier professional-grade displays. It is clearly designed for professionals, while its elegant look makes it a good-looking piece in any receptionist’s desk. Based on its qualities, this product seems to be targeting users who care most about color accuracy, yet doesn’t want to mess with calibrations at home.
