Since its release last month, it has garnered quite a lot of rave reviews and praises. But is the product worth the hype it’s getting? Who is it for?

If you’re looking for a big 27-inch gaming monitor with the best gaming-centric features, then you should definitely consider those ones with Nvidia G-Sync technology, like the Philips 272G5DYEB. It’s tailor-made for competitive gaming, but it’s also has lots of things to offer for work and general use.

Ultimate Performance Gaming Monitor

With the 27-inch Twisted Nematic (TN) panel, Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels) and 144Hz refresh rate, Philips 272G5DYEB is quite similar to earlier model Philips Brilliance 242G5DJEB. Their difference lies in the latter’s compatibility with Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, making it a great choice for gamers, as it promises ultra-smooth results, whatever frame rate games are running at (as long as they don’t drop below 30Hz).

Rich Colors and Good Depth of Overall Shades for Your Games and Movies

Colors in games are respectfully rich, and shades have good depth, though there may be some weakening of saturation further down the screen. In Battlefield 4, environment looked naturally, with vibrant elements such as fires and colors stood out nicely, such as the containers appearing brightly painted. A lighter screen surface would make places look a little more vibrant, but this monitor right here makes good deep greens, bold reds, and bright glowing oranges.

For movies, colors look natural, even in high definition titles like Skyfall on Blu-ray. The thick black bezel at both top and bottom of the screen (due to UltraWide Aspect Ratio common in movies like this) helped cut off areas the usually shows the best viewing angle related inconsistencies. The environment and skin tones appeared nicely saturated. Other important elements such as shade variety, looked nice as well.

Excellent Responsiveness for the Best Games and Movies Experience

(image from Amazon)

In Battlefield 4, this monitor’s responsiveness was clearly excellent, even without activating its ‘Fast’ setting. There are no signs of trailing resulting from weak pixel response, nor any obvious ghosting. The frame rate matches the refresh rate (144Hz), making an excellent connection for smooth and fast gaming experience.

For Blu-ray movies with limited fps (24fps), the monitor’s performance may look sluggish, as it is not used in its full potential. However, there are no serious issue caused by sluggish pixel response; no signs of trailing and ghosting. The screen’s fluidity will be certainly limited when playing low frame rate movies.

Nvidia G-Sync Technology for the Smoothest and Fastest Gaming Experience

(image from Amazon)

Designed for serious hardcore gamers, the Philips 272G5DYEB promises to help users dominate the competition like never before. This gaming monitor comes equipped with the latest Nvidia G-sync technology which eliminates tearing and stuttering of the screen, providing the fast and smooth gaming experience, arguably the fastest and smoothest out there today.

The Nvidia G-Sync technology is a groundbreaking feature that more and more monitor brands try to acquire today (with Asus, BenQ and ViewSonic following the trend). It’s a revolutionary performance designed to achieve smooth and fast display through faster refresh rates to the GPU in GeForce GTX-powered PC, and works by syncing the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU, which eliminates screen tearing, better the input lag and minimizes display stutter. This gives the screen all the ability to display sharper objects, ultra smooth gameplay, and stunning visual performance, whatever game you decide to play in your PC. Quite a substantial competitive edge for serious gamers.

Works with 1ms SmartResponse and 144Hz Refresh Rate to Optimize Your Gaming Experience

As said earlier, this monitor is designed for serious gamers playing hardcore competitive games. This means it’s fully equipped to deliver the faster response rate and refresh rate possible.

As an excellent gaming monitor, Philips 272G5DYEB redraws the screen image for up to 144 times per second. That’s 2.4x faster than the standard display of 60Hz. A low frame rate can make enemies in FPS games jump from one place to another on your screen, making them very difficult to hit. The 144Hz frame rate of this Philips gaming display gets those critical moments and missing images on your screen in ultra-smooth fashion, allowing you to easily hit them with whatever you have in your arsenal. Pair that with ultra-low input lag and zero screen tearing and you will get a perfect gaming monitor for the most demanding titles.

The 1ms SmartResponse technology is exclusive in Philips. It works by automatically adjusting response time to specific requirements of different applications, such as watching action-packed movies, playing big title games, etc., which all require faster response time to produce judder, time-lag, and images free of ghosting.

Nvidia 3D Vision Ready to Transform Your Viewing Experience to 3D Immersive Full HD

The 272G5DYEB from Philips is Nvidia 3D Vision Ready. Which means it is fully capable of transforming your standard Full HD viewing experience to immersive 3D Full HD 1080p experience. It supports the latest the richest selection of 3D content available today, including Blu-ray 3D movies, photos, and of course, games. With the help of the Nvidia 3D Vision 2 glasses technology, you can enjoy all your games and movies not just in 3D, but in twice-as-sharp 3D images than the traditional 3D technology available in most monitors and TVs today.

Also, this product comes with Nvidia 3D LightBoost, a unique Nvidia technology that improves 3D experience dramatically by brightening the screen images and providing richer color quality than most existing display technologies today. It does however, require extra Nvidia 3D Vision 2 Kit for you to enjoy.

Nvidia Ultra Low Motion Blur Mode to Help Motions Look Sharper

(image from Amazon)

With Nvidia ULMB (Ultra Low Motion Blur) mode, objects in motion on your screen look sharper than the standard operation, better than high refresh rates such as 120Hz.

Medium Matte Screen Surface to Eliminate Unwanted Glares and Reflections

The surface of the Philips 272G5DYEB’s screen is coated with a medium matte surface, a matte anti-glare outer polarizing layer which seems a little rough than smooth. This greatly helps the reduction of unwanted glares and eliminates reflections caused by ambient light. However, it also affects the screen’s clarity and vibrancy performance, impacting images with a slight graininess to light and white colors. This is not a big deal though, and most users have grown used to matte surface’s limitations. Some however, may dislike the graininess.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

Philips displays are best known for quality TV and home entertainment. With Philips 272G5DYEB, they are looking to make a noise in computer monitor market. Equipped with VESA mounting holes to be used with third-party ergonomic products, this 27-inch screen makes a great monitor for movies and games.

If you want a more immersive experience with this display and opt to put two 272G5DYEB side-by-side for dual monitor setup, then your best bet is the Ergotron LX Wall Mount LCD Arm. Each arm of this dual monitor stand can be adjusted independently, allowing you to improve your workstation ergonomics and entertainment comfort. It is very easy to adjust, and it comes with sleek and streamlined design makes it easy for one-touch adjustment. It also comes with the brand’s patented Constant Force technology, which keeps the attached displays stable and secured. It also has the super cable management system that will keep your workstation neat and clean. This LCD monitor arm is well built and has all the features and functions you need for the best viewing experience.

Design and Features

The Philips 272G5DYEB sports a solid and robust look. The side bezels look quite chunky, measuring 1.02-inch thick at the top, 0.8-inch at the sides and 1.5-inch at the bottom. The cabinet is made up of a robust matte black plastic, while the screen surface comes with a regular medium matte anti0glare, which is great in beating reflections and glares. The left side of the bottom bezel also features the product’s main selling (Nvidia G-Sync 144Hz).

Buttons and Functions

The right side of the bottom bezel houses the touch-sensitive OSD (on-screen display) controls. They are namely (from left to right) ‘True Point (On-Screen Crosshair)/Back’, ‘True Point Menu (Select Crosshair Design)/Down’, ‘ULMB/Up’, ‘Menu/OK’ and power.

A small white power LED glows icy white when the monitor is on and without any Nvidia-specific feature enabled, and blinks when the display is on standby.

This Philips gaming monitor doesn’t feature the usual ‘SmartImage Game’, which is common among monitors with G-Sync technology. It does however, come with a range of Gamma and Color temperature settings. Ultra Low Motion Blur (ULMB), when activated, affects the images.

Though some of its basic functionalities are striped from the OSD, some main and useful features such as Gamma mode remains. Users can also adjust the color channels manually, but it is a little unnecessary as white point is already right where it should be. The ULMB  setting dims the image and raises gamma a little. Overall, this monitor has great balance (including white point).

Blazing Fast Connectivity

(image from Amazon)

With such power and Nvidia G-sync feature, the connection between the display and PC has to step up. Fortunately, Philips paired this gaming monitor with a great, blazing fast connectivity. With zero latency and excellent performance, the DisplayPort technology lets you enjoy games at high-speed imaging system and faster refresh rate, better than the standard DVI, and able to match everything the monitor can offer. This connection can support cables up to 15 meters long, and transfers date as fast as 21.6 Gbps. This connectivity makes Philips 272G5DYEB not just great for movies and gaming, but for home use and general office use as well, as it can handle incredible amount of work load.

I/O Ports

This monitor comes with DisplayPort 1.2 and four USB 3.0 ports, plus a fast charger, which makes it very convenient to use with your mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, etc.

Fully Adjustable Stand for Ergonomics, Plus VESA Mount

The Philips 272G5DYEB’s excellent capabilities are paired nicely with a fully adjustable stand, which is as sturdy as it looks. The SmartErgoBase stand allows full adjustments of; tilt, swivel, height for maximum comfort and pivot 90° to switch between landscape to portrait orientation mode and versa. It also comes with cable management system to help keep your desk nice and neat, free of cable clutter.

The stand is detached from the cabinet through a quick-release button under the attachment point. Plus, the cabinet comes with 100x100 VESA standard mounting holes, which means you can even improve its ergonomics through third-party products such as desk stands, desk mounts and wall mounts. And for more immersive gaming experience and entertainment system, you can use the VESA mounting holes for dual monitor or triple monitor setups.

Tech Specs

Bottom Line

Time and time again, we see new monitor or monitor technology that really revolutionizes our computer experience, especially in gaming. Today, responsiveness has been a crucial element for choosing gaming monitors, along with other elements. G-sync technology is one of the most promising new display technologies we have today. Philips understands the importance of this technology as they incorporate it with their new Philips 272G5DYEB. Indeed, it’s a genius move.

There are also minor issues in this monitor. The TN panel limits the monitor’s color accuracy and consistency, causing weak saturations down the screen from normal viewing positions. Also, the matte screen may be effective in eliminating glares and reflections, but it impacts the clarity and vibrancy. But then again, there are no lighter screens for 144Hz models just yet. Also, this Philips monitor has very limited port selection.

The contrast performance is something you can expect from a decent TN panel; no strange issues in gamma, keeping your game environments clean.

Aside from its high brightness, the out-of-the-box image quality of Philips 272G5DYEB is well-balanced. The image looks very pleasing overall than most 144Hz monitors out there. It doesn’t have neither a garish oversaturated look, nor does it completely washes out or have extreme gamma biases.

All in all, this monitor is excellent in a lot of areas, but it also has a hefty price tag. The responsiveness wasn’t surprising by any means, as it is something you can expect from a great gaming monitor. The high refresh rate delivers smooth gaming experience, there are no signs of real input lag and the pixel overdrive solution is flexible and nicely implemented. Like all monitors out there with G-sync technology, the images in this monitors is pretty pleasing at 144Hz. Color temperature was great bung for your buck with its ‘6500K’ daylight target, while the adjustable gamma modes makes gamma adjustments pretty easy.
