Who is it for?

Philips Brilliance 242G5DJEB is clearly made for avid gamers. The mid-size 24-inch screen runs at a whopping 1ms pixel response rate and nicely paired with 144Hz refresh rate. This means there is little to no tearing, blurring or ghosting issues in this Philips display, rather, only smooth visuals for users with powerful graphics card can fully enjoy.

Philips 242G5DJEB is a 24-inch gaming monitor that packs a lot of gaming-centric features and functions for hardcore gamers. It runs at standard Full HD (1920 x 1080p) resolution, with an impressive 1ms pixel response time and 144Hz refresh rate for smooth and flawless gaming.

Truly Built for Gaming; TN Panel for Super-Fast Pixel Response and Refresh Rate

Like other gaming monitors, Philips 242G5DJEB uses TN (Twisted Nematic) panel for better gaming display quality. With this, the screen is able to perform with super-fast response time and higher refresh rate for smooth gaming.

This means gamers of intense competitive games will be able to stay ahead of their game, as the monitor provides lag-free and ultra-smooth transitions of images. Thanks to the 1ms gray-to-gray fast response time that negates ghosting and smearing that usually occurs in demanding games with monitors of slow response time.

The 144Hz refresh rate provides this gaming monitor 2.4x faster refresh rate than the standard monitor. Gamers of FPS (first person shooting) games will have no problem rushing and jumping from one spot to another, and easily spot enemies’ movements through ultra-smooth motion, allowing them to react quickly when it’s needed most.

Smart Features; SmartFrame and SmartImage for Better Gaming Experience

Clearly built for gaming, Philips Brilliance 242G5DJEB has tons of special gaming picture modes specially designed for specific types of gameplays. Two of these features are the SmartFrame and the SmartImage feature.

(image from Amazon)

SmartFrame provides better gaming experience by improving screen visibility. This allows gamers to easily see and recognize highlights their screen and spot enemies hiding from a corner. This works by boosting the monitor’s RGB gain level in chosen area; giving spots more attention where you expect enemy movements. Dark enemies where enemies usually hide are ‘brightened’ without causing over-exposure to bright areas. This feature gives gamers the advantage in any situation. This feature also allows users to adjust size and image to their liking, perfect for RTS games.

SmartImage on the other hand, is a new gaming feature from Philips. It works by accessing the monitor’s OSD and fine-tune settings to fit different demands of different types of games.

The selection includes FPS (First-Person Shooter) mode, which improves dark themes in game environments, allowing users to see hidden objects in dark areas of the screen. RTS (Real-Time Strategy) mode which has its own special SmartFrame mode that highlights specific areas both in size and image adjustments, Racing mode which automatically adjusts the monitor with the fastest response time and high color, along with image adjustments, and two Gamer Profiles (Gamer 1 and Gamer 2) for users to save their customized gaming profiles based on specific games. All these profiles’ default settings may cause the screen to look blue and harsh, but a little configuration makes a huge difference. It will let you customize its brightness, contrast, colour temperature, and sharpness settings. Most gaming monitors come with pre-defined profiles for different types of games, but not this kind of customization feature.

SmartSize Lets You Play on Different Screen Sizes

For some reason you don’t want to view images or play games on full screen, you can switch this feature on and choose from 10 different screen sizes; 17" (5:4), 19" (5:4), 18.5" (16:9), 19"w (16:10), 19.5" (16:9), 20" (16:9), 21.5"W (16:9), 22"W (16:10), 23"W (16:9) and 24"W (16:9). Some gamers use this feature to practice gaming in different screen sizes with a single display.

Mediocre Color Accuracy and Viewing Angle

As with other TN-based monitors, it has inferior color quality and viewing angle. The out-of-the-box color rendering isn’t too good. The color temperature reaches 7600K, giving the screen a slight overtone of blue.

For color accuracy, it only scored 84.6% sRGB color gamy on its default settings, which is below average even for TN panel standards. Many TN panel gaming monitors score at least 90%.

Overall though, the colours spread evenly across the gamut. Its weakest points were the red and green coverage. Blues and yellows were strong, and this can mean colors will look a little cooler.

Fortunately though, you can improve the colour accuracy to a decent 92.1% when you calibrate the monitor with its customizable User Colour Temperature profile. This feature improves both the red and green colors, giving the screen a little more warmth it needs. However, the colour coverage is still mediocre compared to many TN gaming monitors, including the cheap Iiyama Prolite GB2773HS, which scored 97.6%.

Subjectively, images still look good though, as all reds, greens and blue look bright and vibrant. They were a few shades lighter, but the product has excellent contrast levels help illuminate the colors perfectly.

In terms of viewing angle, it is understandable that TN panels like this will suffer from inferior viewing angle. The viewing angle of Philips 242G5DJEB is quite restrictive, and colours don’t look consistent over the display.

With VESA Standard Mounting Holes

(image from Amazon)

The back side of the cabinet features 100x100 VESA mounting holes, which means users can easily mount this gaming monitor to a more flexible and versatile mount, or to use with another display side-by-side for dual monitor or triple monitor setup. The VESA holes are covered by the arm stand when it’s attached into place.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Setup Options

24-inch monitors is usually the preferred size for gaming, it’s not too small, and not too big. Just perfect for your eyes to scan and cover the screen and your mouse to hover around. It’s also a great choice for dual monitor and multiple monitor setups, as most after-market ergonomic solutions such are designed to accommodate multiple mid-sized displays.

If you’re looking for a cheap dual monitor setup solution for Philips 242G5DJEB, then you should check out the MonMount LCD-194 Dual LCD Monitor Stand. This stand can hold two monitors of up to 26 inches big, and can easily clamp on your desk, with stable and secured support. It comes with very few assembly pieces, making it really easy to put together and set up to your workstation.

If you want a stand that can is completely adjustable, with fully articulated arm, then you can opt for Ergotron LX Dual Stacking Arm. It can fully lift two mid-sized displays side-by-side or in stacking position to dual monitor setup.

Design and Features

(image from Amazon)

The Philips 242G5DJEB is quite a good-looking display for its purpose. Most gaming monitors out there look futuristic, which adds to the display’s gaming appeal. This one however, looks pretty serious and sober-looking. The plain matte-black plastic casing features a flash of red line which features Philips name brand at the bottom bezel. The bottom left has a subtle 144Hz label which indicates the monitor’s high refresh rate. The bezels are thin, making the screen easily stand out.

Buttons and Controls

The lower right hand corner of the bezel houses the monitor’s control buttons. The buttons are strategically hidden underneath the cabinet, together with the Power LED.

With SmartKeypad for Quick and Easy Image Settings Control

(image from Amazon)

This product comes with a brand’s Smart Keypad; a small menu controlled shaped like a computer mouse and connects to the PC via USB. This controller lets users change display settings without reaching the menu buttons mounted on the bezel and switch from one profile setting to another without having to change the options on the menu. The keys may not feel intuitive, but it’s a great convenient feature to have.

With Wide Range of Inputs/Output Ports for All Types of Users

This monitor may be especially made for gamers, but with wide selection of connectivity options, it can support many different devices as well. It has VGA and DisplayPort outputs and two HDMI outputs and a headphone jack. One HDMI port supports MHL connection as well, allowing users to connect MHL-compatible devices such as smartphones or tablet with the LCD monitor, and view mobile content on the bigger screen.

(image from Amazon)

There are also four (4) USB 3.0 ports on the left side of the cabinet, where you can use with this display for file transfer and to charge your phone, tablet and various handheld USB devices. USB 3.0 enables ultra-fast file transfer (5.0 gbit/s transfer rate), ten times faster than the old USB 2.0 standard. Quite generous for Philips to include.

You will have to use the bundled dual-link DVI cable to take full advantage of the monitor’s high refresh rate. However, you will be limited to a DVI-D connection.

Fully Adjustable Stand for Gaming Comfort

As a display designed for long hours of gaming, Philips understands the importance of comfort and ergonomics for this product. Thus, they included a fully adjustable stand, which allows 5⁰ forward tilt and 25⁰ backward tilt, swivels 65⁰ both left and right, offers height adjustment and can pivot to rotate from landscape to portrait orientation.

Tech Specs

Bottom Line

There is no doubt that Philips 242G5DJEB is perfectly suited for gamers. The response time is more than fast enough to handle and run the latest big title action-packed games, whether it’s FPS, RTS, RPG, Racing, etc.

The whole thing is also very easy to setup, as it mainly involves laying the panel on (on a soft surface) and clipping the pre-assembled stand to the back through the slotted VESA mount holes. The stand easily slides to the mount hole, secured in place with a sprung loaded clip. Should you need to remove the monitor from the stand, all you have to do is activate the clip through the button located just under the VESA mount hole.

The biggest issue people will see on this product is its price. Though it is a great gaming monitor, it is more expensive than its closest competitors, namely AOC myUltraSpeed G2460PQU and the larger Iiyama Prolite GB2773HSBoth has 144Hz refresh rate. Philips Brilliance 242G5DJEB however, has a lot going on justify its price tag. It has better image quality than AOC and has more I/O ports than the liyama. Also, it doesn’t support 3D vision gaming system. Most monitors at 120Hz can support 3D.

Though its color accuracy can be improved, many gamers don’t stress on color accuracy, as response time and refresh rate are the most important factors.
