Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600; An In-Depth Review

Many laptop users rarely use their portable computers on their desk. Most of the time, it ends up on their lap or chest, or even on the sofa or bed. This is why they’re called laptops in the first place – to let you use your computer anywhere, any way you like. However, despite its portability, there are limitations in laptops’ design which actually causes its inconvenience – that is the instability you get when putting it on soft surfaces (such as your lap) and the intolerable heat that they emit. This is where lap desks come in to the picture – to save users from the heat of their laptop and provide stable and solid support anytime, anywhere. And one of the better products out there in the market is the Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600What makes this thing unique from other models in its line? Check out this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide to know more.

Who is it for?

As with other lap desks, the Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600 is designed for laptop users who love to use their portable computer away from their desk. It’s an excellent ergonomic solution for lounging on your sofa, bed, or when travelling in the train, plane, bus, etc. It also comes packed with high tech features that let you use your laptop more efficiently.

Introducing the Intuitive Multi-Touch Pad

What makes Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600 unique, if not better than many of its lap desk competitors is that, it comes with a high-tech feature called the multi-touch pad, a retractable pad that when connected to your laptop (through the provided unifying receiver), allows touchpad access to your computer. It’s like a touch pad mouse for your fingers.

It’s a full five inch area where you can use your finger as points to scroll and browse through your laptop. And because it’s a multi-touch pad, it allows you to use multiple fingers simultaneously to navigate through your computer; you can use two fingers to scroll through web pages, use three fingers for the forward or back thumb buttons of the mouse. This design allows you to navigate through your laptop comfortably and efficiently, even when you’re lying on your bed or reclined on your sofa.

And because it is retractable, the pad nicely slides back inside the lap desk for full protection during transport.

With Rubber Grip for Secured Hold for Your Laptop

The retractable touch pad may be the star of this product, but the lap desk part is just as important. The top surface of this product is wrapped with a grippy rubber with nice swirly textures. It’s quite effective in keeping things on top in place, but it can be way too sticky as it everything seems to stick to it, including dirt or any undesirable items that floats in the air, hence, becoming a dirt magnet. It’s also poses a challenge for the lap desk, as it definitely makes it tough to clean and maintain, as it doesn’t seem to want to give up on anything that has attached to it. You would definitely want to have a cleaning cloth handy wherever you go with this lap desk.

All-In-One Convenience Through Decent Stability to Heat-Shielding Aspect

This product really provides great convenience; the size feels impressively spacious, considering it’s not really meant for workhorse laptops (17 inches). It does a good job in shielding you from overheating laptop, while the touchpad really provides excellent convenience. You will never need to connect a mouse or trackball for your laptop, which is really quite a unique experience. The freedom to use two to three fingers at the same time to navigate the laptop is exceptionally intuitive. The only thing that would be better about the touchpad is if it’s a little bigger.

As said earlier, the base may not be perfect; the two strips are definitely inadequate in anchoring the Lapdesk N600, this issue becomes more prevalent especially if you recline on your sofa or in bed.

Design and Features

The plastic slab of Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600 is large enough to support anything, from a netbook to large workhorse laptops (up to 15 inches only though). It is also thick enough to insulate both your thighs underneath and the laptop on top. Plus it is rubber covered, ensuring secured and stable support for your laptop so it won’t slip easily. The biggest design upgrade of course, is the retractable Touchpad, which lets users browse comfortably right from their lap. Nevertheless, the top part is really thought-off in terms of aesthetics and functionality.

Easy Installation and Setup

Installing and using this lap desk is extremely easy. Simply activate the pre-installed four AA batteries by removing the plastic strips insulation from their contact points. Then, plug the USB nano-receiver, pull out the small side tray and then turn the device on. After a few seconds, Windows will recognize your device and install the lap desk’s driver to your laptop. Your laptop will read the device as an input device, which means there’s no need for special software to install it. The downside of this though is that, because the Logitech Setpoint software doesn’t support this lap desk model, you won’t be able to do much tweaking of the buttons.

Also, as the receiver is part of Logitech’s Unifying Technology, you may not even need to plug in the receiver.

Grippy Top for Stability, Smooth Bottom

The base houses the battery compartment and the nano-transceiver. It is made up of smooth plastic. It comes with a couple of long and thin rubber strips. However, unlike padded cushions that provides soft and more stable support, these strips will barely hold the lap desk in place (on your lap), making it very easy to slip from your lap. Having said that, the bottom side definitely need some more contouring that molds to the legs and feel more stable on the lap. One the plus side though, the bottom will not be as big as compared to padded cushions that comes in many of its competitors, and smooth and definitely easy to clean compared to the dust magnet top side.

Decently Large Work Surface, But Not for Extremely Large Laptops

Dimensions wise, the Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600 is comfortably big, it has no problem supporting laptops 15 or 16 inches of size or smaller. However, if your model is 17 inch, then this lap desk is definitely not for you, as you may have a hard time setting the laptop on top and using its touchpad. Its thickness, or should we say “thinness” however, makes it extremely easy to find room inside over-stuffed laptop bag.

 Tech Specs

Bottom Line

The light, portable and petite body of Lapdesk N600 makes it quite a good product, despite its drawbacks. It is easy to carry around and can really provide work efficiency that it extremely helpful, if not important, for laptop users, especially on-the-go or those who love to use their portable computers away from their desks.

Its lack of a contoured base may not make it as comfortable as other Logitech Lapdesks, but it’s moderately stable enough for most types of use, though you need to constantly balance it a bit on your lap.

The intuitive touchpad on the other hand, is truly a genius addition. It gets rid of the mouse and allows smooth multi-tasking with your computer. It may not be ideal for tasks and programs that needs the precision of the mouse, but for daily use, it’s truly a great feature to have.

Though they’re far from perfect, lap desks offers unique combination of features, and the Logitech Touch Lapdesk N600 is one of the better options out there for people who regularly use their laptops away from their desks, even with some minor quirks.
