Dell UltraSharp U3417W; An In-Depth Review

Dual Monitors Guide is no strangers to ultrawide monitors. We’ve reviewed quite a lot of them since their first wave appeared into the market a few years ago. In 2014 for example, Dell first introduced its flagship monitor in their ultrawide series with Dell UltraSharp U3415W. It was already an awesome product on its own, with some minor issues here and there. Now, they have the revamped version of that display in Dell UltraSharp U3417W, which promises solve the shortcomings of its predecessor. What makes it better than its older brother? How does it stack in the market of ultrawide curved screen monitors? Check out this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide.

Who is it for?

Like any other monitor in the market that comes with a massive 34-inch screen, Dell UltraSharp U3417W is a treat for multi-taskers. It has the screen enough to open and display multiple apps and programs at once, and the curved screen to provide excellent viewing angle for the user sitting in front of the computer. It comes with tons of amazing features, along with the staple and dependable ones. Those who are looking to upgrade their monitor to a bigger one, or don’t like the idea of having two monitors sitting side-by-side should definitely check out this monitor.

Benefits

Dell UltraSharp U3417W is not your run-off-the-mill monitor. It’s beautifully made, with massive curved screen for all your multi-tasking needs. It is fully equipped to provide top-notch performance. Plus, it is packed with features that make daily computing nice and easy, not to mention is comes with myriad of connection options.

Good Color Performance, Contrast Is A Bit Problematic

Running at 3440x1440 resolution, we know that image quality of this monitor is strong, at least for colour representation and making vivid imagery. The screen avoided the neon tint that brighter colors can take on some monitors, if anything, they were a little bit muted. When it comes to covering the sRGB and AdobeRGB spectrum, the color reproduction falls right in line with other ultrawide screens.

The tamed colors may be a problem for some, but the accurate colors of this monitor is usually more important in the long run, which is absolutely crucial for color-sensitive tasks, such as video editing work.

Spyder5 calibration test shows the contrast ratio falls way below the middle range for standard monitors, let alone for ultrawide category. Even its predecessor Dell U3415W boasted almost twice this newer panel’s contrast ratio. This issue may not be as bad as it sounds, but it is something even calibration can do very little about, or increasing the contrast in the OSD settings.

Curved Screen For Better More Immersive Viewing Experience

Curved screen TVs and computer monitors created much discussion about their usefulness. Does the curve panel really make a difference? Well, the general consensus is, for TVs, since you will be seating several feet away from the screen, the curve doesn’t provide much difference, as you will be viewing the whole screen straight-up from where you’re sitting. That is why you have to have a really large TV screen to appreciate the benefits of the curve.

For monitors on the other hand, the curve screen works better with your peripheral vision, as you will be sitting a couple of feet away from the monitor, which is a treat for your eyes. Of course, there will be different opinions from different people, so it’s best to check it out yourself. In our opinion, the deeper curve in this monitor provides better depth for viewer’s field of view. It’s a great alternative to dual monitor setup, as the larger screen real estate of course, provides more space for multi-tasking.

Decent Gaming Capabilities

Gaming capabilities is definitely many of us look for when it comes to choosing monitors, let along ultra-wide monitors. We want to get the best bung for our buck, so we look for displays that can function well for many different tasks and purposes. In the case of this monitor, gaming performance is respectable, which is at 5ms gray-to-gray and 8ms gray-to-gray at normal mode. Those were far from impressive numbers, but they can be respected, since this monitor is not designed for such purpose. Blacks are rich, with good contrast for more immersive experience. Those who don’t look for oversaturated gaming would really love this display.

Dual Monitors and Multiple Monitors Mounting Options

34-inch monitors are the solution for people who don’t like the idea of putting two or three monitors side-by-side on their desks. It provides enough desk real estate for multi-tasking and more immersive viewing experience. Make it a curved screen and you get better viewing experience with improved depth of view in both sides..

This Dell UltraSharp monitor comes with good set of adjustments. But if that's not enough for you, then you can opt for an wall mount with interactive arm to give you that more comfortable and ergonomic viewing experience.

One good example is the Interactive Arm, VHD from Ergotron. This wall mount can support screens ranging from 30-inch to 60-inch in size and weight of 35 lbs. to 70 lbs. It is fully adjustable, allowing you to swing, lift and turn your display to any direction, and make the screen look like it’s floating in the air. This monitor lets users move their monitor or TV into multiple positions with one simple touch; no more sore necks and caused by awkward angles

Design and Features

Dell UltraSharp U3417W sports the staple Dell design – simple, straightforward, yet elegant. Design wise, the monitor looks pretty basic, except of course, from the beautiful curved screen. It’s in no way striking, but it’s beautifully well-built. It comes with very thin glossy bezels all around, which blends into the screen when turned off. Though mostly plastic, the materials and construction feels really solid, and in no way cheap. It is paired with a nice and sturdy stand, which shape compliments the curve of the screen.

Despite its simplistic look, the design of this monitor is still way pleasing than your standard flat panel monitor.

Buttons and Controls

On-Screen Display (OSD) of this monitor is controlled by four ‘clicky’ buttons. Like most monitors, they’re tucked nicely under the right side of the screen. Again, these physical buttons are clicky, which means they are not as responsive as some of its competitor. On the plus side however, they prevent accidental presses.

As with other Dell monitors, the OSD packs basically anything; from brightness control, gamma, color modes, and display modes. Also, it packs with more settings and shortcut options.

Wide Array of Connectivity Options

There is no shortage of inputs and outputs for this monitor, as it comes with all the connectivity options you will ever use and need. They’re all housed around the back of the monitor. The collection includes has two full-sized DisplayPorts (1 in and 1 out), with Multi-Stream Transport that lets you daisy-chain your displays. Plus of course two HDMI 2.0 ports. It also comes with the extremely convenient USB 3.0 ports (four of them to be exact, with the two-amp charging designed for ultra-fast charging for your devices), a staple feature among 34-inch displays.

The only thing missing right here is the Tunderbolt 3, a port we usually find among high-end displays. However, most ultra-wide users will be using DisplayPort, so there’s that.

With Nice Quality Integrated Speakers

If you’re considering getting a monitor of this size, chances are you’re willing to invest for a nice pair of speakers. If you’re not, then Dell has got you covered with its surprisingly loud and clear integrated speakers. The pair of 9W built-in speakers provides good sound quality which causes no tinny feedback, or rattling when playing louder movies or games. It also has decent bass reproduction. This is quite a nice addition, since most users of monitors this size won’t have the space to accommodate speakers on their desk.

If you’re not satisfied with that adjustment, then you can always get rid of the existing stand to make way for more ergonomic options, such as monitor stands and monitor mounts with better range of adjustments.

Bottom Line

Though ultra-wide monitors is not for everyone, we can’t help but wonder what it would feel like to work on a massive screen on a daily basis. And for many people, that’s something they’re willing to give out a try, even if that means shelling out big amount of money. If you’re one of these people, then Dell UltraSharp U3417W is something you should definitely try. Gaming performance is middling, but that is completely understandable, given the IPS panel it uses. This monitor may not be for everyone and it’s a little pricey, but it is well equipped to provide great value for people who demand more screen space to multi-task. Also, the curved screen is a pleasure to work with its excellent viewing angle, a new technology you might want to try out. It also has very accurate colors and strong grayscale performance, making it an excellent choice for color-demanding tasks. Plus, it comes packed with nice features that can make your daily work a lot more convenient. All in all, it’s one of the best out there when it comes to high-end extra-large displays market.
