Dell P2416D; An In-Depth Review

There is no denying that 4K UHD (3840x2160) resolution has been making a buzz in the computer world right now, from business offices, commercial centers, to small office home offices. With its popularity on the rise, it is easy to forget that there are still people out there who would rather opt for practical display for their system and more budget-friendly. This is where WQHD (2560x1440) resolution comes into the picture- bridging the gap between Full HD (1920x1080) resolution and QHD, in either smaller or even larger (up to 27-inch) displays. The Dell P2416D crams WQHD to an even smaller space (23.8inch), making it one of the most affordable WQHD monitors in the market today. How does the resolution work on a smaller screen? What makes this monitor different and unique from its competitors? Let’s find out in this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide.

Who is it for?

Anyone who is looking to upgrade his computer display from Full HD but doesn’t want to spend a fortune on a big 4K Ultra HD monitor can choose Dell P2416D, a mid-sized WQHD display with the most aggressive price tag. Despite some corners being cut to keep the price down, this monitor still manages to show images with great clarity and good overall image quality.

Benefits

The Dell P2416D belongs to the brand’s professional line of monitors as it crams WQHD (2560 x 1440p) resolution into a 23.8-inch screen. The monitor itself utilizes AU Optronics (AUO) M238DAN01.0 AHVA (Advanced Hyper-Viewing Angle / IPS) panel to provide strong colour consistency across the screen. This monitor is truly designed for office and work environment, as it packs the right features for presentations and easy collaborations. Also, it doesn’t fall short in photos and games.

Vivid and Vibrant Colors in WQHD

The Dell P2416D takes pride in its resolution that is ahead of the mainstream – vivid and vibrant colours with amazing details in Wide Quad High Definition or 2560 x 1440p resolution.

The CIE 1976 Uniform Chromaticity test shows this Dell monitor has 100% of sRGB and 77% of Adobe RGB color gamuts, this means this display guarantees an image with accurate and vibrant sRGB colors.

Decent Responsiveness for Games and Movies

This Dell monitor is a good all-around monitor, but like most monitors in its price range, it doesn’t have the best responsiveness for gaming. But that doesn’t mean it can’t work well with games and movies. In demanding games such as Battle Field 4, there were some moderate blurring, which is predominantly caused by eye movement in-line with what we see even on the fastest 60Hz screens. Some optimal pixel transitions and trailing can be observed from here and there, and they can be pretty prevalent in dark objects set against medium background. These issues however, are not particularly widespread, and most users would definitely not notice them.

For Blu-ray movies, this monitor doesn’t have any particular issues from its responsiveness. Neither observable overshoot not sluggish pixel responses nor trailing can be seen. It is however, the 24fps frame rate that limits overall fluidity.

Wide Viewing Angle

Sporting IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel technology, this Dell monitor has wide viewing angles, making it a good option for both serious work and entertainment. The 178° vertical viewing angle and 178° horizontal viewing angle maintains consistent colors from virtually any angle.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Mounting Options

24-inch is the perfect size for dual monitor or even triple monitor setup; it's great for multitasking  as people can position two of this monitors side-by-side without overcrowding their desk. And there are lots of good third-party options out there for multiple monitor setup for monitors of this size.

One of the best products there is the Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm. It's a fully-adjustable dual LCD monitor arm made with high quality materials such as polished aluminum construction, ensuring unsurpassed quality and longevity. Each of its arm can support monitors up to 27-inch of size, which means holding two 24-inch screens side-by-side is a walk in the park for this product. It also comes with Constant Force (CF) technology, a  patented feature from Ergotron that ensures smooth and easy adjustments, but still keep screens stable and secured in place.

For those looking for a cheaper alternative, there is MonMount LCD-194 Dual LCD Monitor Stand. This dual monitor stand easily clamps on the desk and hold two screens side-by-side. It is one of the most affordable monitors around, well-designed and very easy to assemble and setup

Design and Features

Like many Dell monitors, the Dell P2416D sports a modern-office design – simple yet elegant. The front side of the cabinet sports matte black plastic bezel, 0.75 inches thick on all sides. The screen itself sports a light matte anti-glare surface. The Dell logo is located in the bottom middle bezel. Both its top left and right are clean. While the backside houses the I/O ports and VESA-compliant mounting holes.

Easy Mounting and Setup

Attaching the cabinet to the mounting on its stand is fairly easy. First, remove the cover and place your monitor on the stand. Then fit the tabs of the upper part of the stand in the groove at the backside of the monitor, press until it snaps to its place.

The mount the monitor to third-party ergonomic solutions, such as desk stands, desk mounts or wall mounts, or to make a dual monitor setup, simply place the screen face down to a soft cloth, then, press the release button on the stand to remove it from the mount.

Buttons and Controls

The bottom bezel houses the control buttons to the OSD (On-Screen Display), alongside a power button (with power symbol) at the bottom right corner. The power button glows white when the monitor powered On, and flashes light at Low Power State. The light is turned off when the monitor is off.

The first two buttons on top are customizable, by default however, the first buttons gives access to the Preset Modes of the monitor, while the second is for Brightness and Contrast. The third button is for the Main Menu while the fourth is for Exit.

The ODS’s Menu includes Brightness/Contrast, Auto Adjust, Input Source, Color, Display, Energy, Menu, Personalize, and Others. To navigate the Menu, use the top two buttons and Press Menu button to make a selection.

Preset Modes includes Standard, Multimedia, Movie, Game, Paper, Warm, Cool and Custom.

Bottom Line

(image from Amazon)

When it comes to displays, Dell certainly has lots of things to offer, as the brand is among the world’s leading manufacturer of high quality screens with affordable price tags. And with Dell P2416D, they’re looking good in maintaining this reputation, as the monitor sports high-end specs for a very affordable price.

It is undeniable that this monitor can work in all basic home and office use, or even in gaming and watching videos and movies. Thanks to the highly detailed image reproduction, colour accuracy, comfortable viewing angles, and high contrast. Also, this Dell monitor doesn’t emit Pulse-Width modulation across all brightness levels, which means the screen will not cause additional discomfort to your eyes (and thus, doesn’t cause stress to your brain).

Make no mistake about its cheap price tag, this monitor is fully equipped even for highly-demanding tasks such as drawing and web design. Of course, it lacks the sophistication for professional graphic design and professional photography. Also, like most IPS monitors in the market today, this Dell display suffers from IPS glow. While almost invisible when directly in-front of the screen, it can be visibl from a wider viewing angle.

Given its price, the Dell P2416D is certainly something worth to consider in basic workstation, especially those who work their computers for general computing purposes. The screen itself offers very high resolution, in great details and colour accuracy (in sRGB mode), with excellent viewing angles.

All in all, it’s quite a compelling package, well worth to consider if you’re choosing for an affordable monitor at WQHD that is good for both work and play. Also, its size is great for dual monitor setup, which should better improve work productivity.
