Cooler Master NotePal U2 PLUS Review

Since they first came in the market in 1992, Cooler Master has become one of the major names in PC components and peripherals market. They have wide range of solid performing line products. The name is mostly known for cases, power supplies and cooling solutions. But a couple of years ago, they have also ventured to laptops, particularly laptop cooling pads. As expected, they retained the kind of quality we have loved over the years. One of their better products is the Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus, revered by many as the best portable laptop cooling pad. What makes this product better than others? Check out this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide.

Who is it for?

Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus is obviously designed for laptop users. Though the brand is best known for gaming products, this cooling pad is actually designed for all types of users. Considered as one of the best portable cooling pads, it’s particularly designed for laptop users on-the-go; it is light, slim and easy to carry around inside your bag.

Benefits

As with other Cooler Master products, Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus is in an attractive and well-thought product.

High Performance Movable Fans for Targeted Cooling

This cooling pad comes with a pair of high quality cooling fans upgraded to deliver optimal airflow and improved stability. They’re also relatively quiet, allowing users to enjoy its cooling benefits without causing too much noise. Perfect for offices or any rooms where you share space with other people and don’t want to cause distractions.

The best thing about these fans is their movability. Most cooling pads in the market today position their fans in a fixed spot and expect it push air to your laptop through the ventilation holes underneath the laptop’s chassis. This cooling pad however, comes with fans that are movable. Meaning, you can place it specifically to any point within the cooling pad, allowing users to target cool their laptop and push air where the vents are located. This direct cooling system is an excellent way to target specific heat zones of your portable computer.

Design and Features

Cooler Master has been consistent in packaging their products, as this one also comes with a nicely designed box; nice color theme, perfect font choice and of course, the classy aura we commonly find in Cooler Master packaging. Also, they’re not afraid in giving potential buyers a peek of the product, which is why they included a large clear window on the right side of the box to show it’s quite well inside.

As with many Cooler Master products, this one comes in a clean and sleek design that easily matches and compliments to your laptop.

The pad is capable of accommodating laptops up to 17 inch of size. Unfortunately, though labeled as portable, it’s not meant to be used on your lap, as the base is designed to stand on flat surfaces.

Solid Metal Construction for Durability, But Light Weight

The pad itself is made up of sand blasted aluminum, this gives you a good idea of its quality, as this means it’s ultra-solid and hard wearing while not packing much weight, keeping the whole thing extremely lightweight.

Perforated Surface for Optimal Ventilation

The edges are solid metal, while the inside is perforated with the standard circular holes to allow airflow and ventilation. For obsessive-compulsive buyers, there are exactly 913 perforations in the surface.

Angled for Comfortable Position

The cooling pad is positioned at 30˚ angle, providing quite an ergonomic typing position, making it comfortable for long hours of use.

Looking at the bottom, there is nothing special about pad, except the couple of raiser feet that are stabilized by another piece of solid metal.

A Pair of Powerful Fans to Keep Your Laptop Cool

The fans have enough clearance space though when installed towards the back of the cooling pad. It effectively draws cool air and pushes it through the mesh. Installing towards the front will make the cooler rest on them and may lose stability.

With Clever Built-In Cable Management System

The rubbers cover front part of the two feet, with an extra rectangular piece attached to the back of each foot that cleverly serves as a piece for cable management. Providing an easy way to keep your desk cable-clutter free.

USB-Pass Through to Power Up the Fans

As a portable device, this cooling pad depends on your laptop for power through USB connectivity. The USB pass-through to power up the two fans feels a little bulky. You need to connect the USB out of it, otherwise, you may need to bend the cable that powers the fans, or it can get damaged.

Elastic Strap A.K.A. Safety Belt

There’s an elastic strap (which Cooler Master calls safety belt) that acts as the line of defense for your laptop and secure it there for improved portability. It’s quite a nice concept, but it only works for 14 inches laptop. 13 inches laptop will be too small to be secured and will simply fall off, and anything larger than 14 will be sticking out too much on one side.

Also, this feature will require you to remove the fans and transport them separately. Otherwise, you can’t fit it inside your bag because of its thick back section.

Rubbers for Stability and Keep Everything In Place

Rubberized base/feet is staple in cooling pads, and the rubber in Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus does what we expect it to do – it keeps the laptops, notebooks and ultrabooks stable and secured in place. It feels soft to touch but it is extremely durable.

As with many rubbers however, the rubber in this pad is a lint magnet. Meaning, it attracts dirt and can be difficult to clean as it holds on to almost anything it touches. You will need a lint-free microfiber cloth dampened with alcohol to clean it.

Tech Specs

Bottom Line

Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plus is quite a unique product, with the now-traditional mesh-finish and exterior fans. The biggest plus side of this cooling pad is definitely the ability to move fans, as it makes spot cooling easy by coping with different laptop cooling designs. We all know not all machines have their intake fans at the same position.

Of course, there are some drawbacks and limitations in its design. For one, it doesn’t offer height adjustment, which many users search for more comfortable use. Also, there’s only one USB port, meaning, it can’t act as an extension of USB hub for your laptop.

You can definitely trust your laptop with Cooler Master NotePal U2 Plusas it comes with all the features and qualities to keep your laptop cool and protected, a great portable alternative for those with particularly hot laptop and regularly use them on-the-go.  Design wise, we can definitely say it has some flaws. But all in all, the build quality and usability are hard to deny. It’s simple, neat and light, allowing easy and portable use, all for a reasonable, if not affordable price.
