Who is it for?

The BenQ XL2730Z is a huge gaming monitor. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to upgrade their gaming station to one ultra-wide display. It’s perfect for hardcore and professional gamers.

The BenQ XL2730Z is a 27-inch gaming monitor that uses TN (Twisted Nematic) panel for excellent gaming performance. It runs at WQHD (2650x1440p) resolution for accurate and sharp colors and jam-packed with gaming-centric features such as AMD's FreeSync dynamic-refresh technology to deliver excellent gaming performance.

Impressive Performance Right Out of the Box

This BenQ gaming monitor is impressive right from the get go. Chromaticity test shows colors red, green and blue are closely aligned to their ideal coordinates which results to impressively accurate colors that seems to pop out from dark-black background.

For grayscale performance on the other hand, 64-Step grayscale test shows that, this monitor can display all shades of grey, though there are minor issues in overall gray-scale. Obviously, the TN panel is inferior to IPS panel when it comes to crisp and excellent shadow and light details.

Also, like most TN-based panels, the viewing angle is less than ideal, as there are some traces of color shifting when viewing the 27-inch screen from extreme side angles. Also, viewing from the top or bottom will make the screen look washed out.

WQHD with Impressive Color Accuracy and Grayscale Performance

The 27-inch screen of this BenQ display is not just a bigger screen than standard monitor, it also offers 77% more screen space than the traditional Full HD (1920x1080p). This gives gamers improved gaming experience through greater image details.

144Hz Refresh Rate, 1ms GTG Response Time and 10.1ms Input Lag for Ultimate Gaming Experience

(image from Amazon)

Gaming performance is where BenQ XL2730Z really shines. It is crafted for the ultimate gaming experience.

The combination of 144Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms gray-to-gray Pixel Response Time delivers superbly smooth motion handling, with no signs of blurring or ghosting in both big title PC and console games. Grand Theft Auto 5 in PlayStation 4 played pleasantly smooth. Connecting this monitor to a desktop with AMD Radeon R9 270X (or anything with similar or better performance) graphics card will fire up even the most demanding games like Crysis 3. Even when disabling the FreeSync feature, you will still get decent performance, with little to no signs of artifacts, but with slight screen tearing from time to time. Also the 10.1-millisecond Input Lag (the time between pressing the button and seeing the game react) ensures speedy and fluid gameplay.

With AMD’s FreeSync Technology for Smooth Gaming

FreeSync technology is a product of AMD, which is especially made for gaming to eliminate screen tearing without compromising all the usual lag and latency. It works hand-in-hand with the FreeSync from any compatible AMD Radeon graphics card, and when activated, it completely abolishes tearing, stuttering and minimize input latency.

With Motion Blur Reduction and ZeroFlicker Technology for Gaming Comfort

Equipped with the brand’s new Motion Blur Reduction technology, the BenQ XL2730Z improves the gaming experience with ultra-smooth and blur-free performance. This is particularly helpful for action-packed FPS games where every millisecond counts. Gamers will get the experience excellent vision quality, no motion blur and lagging.

It also comes with ZeroFlicker technology, a technology developed to eliminate screen flickering at all brightness levels. This reduces eye fatigue and improves gaming performance. It’s a great feature for hardcore gamers who play for long hours.

Decent Power Consumption, But Without Eco Mode Option

The BenQ XL2730Z runs at 42 watts of power at Standard Mode, which is right in line with other 27-inch monitors in the market, such as the ViewSonic VP2780-4K (41 watts) and the Acer S277HK (48 watts). But unlike the Acer and ViewSonic’s monitor, this BenQ display doesn’t offer Eco mode, which would have been a great addition for workstation.

With VESA-Compliant Mounting Holes for Ergonomic Flexibility

BenQ truly understands the ergonomics in gaming, which is why aside from the adjustable stand, they also include VESA-standard mounting holes in this monitor to provide users the ergonomic flexibility should they decide to upgrade their stand to better third-party ergonomic solutions such as monitor stand with articulating arm, desk mount, wall mounts or even sit-stand workstations.

Dual Monitor and Multiple Monitor Mounting Options

As with most 27-inch monitors out there, there aren't many options for dual monitors setup, much more for triple monitor. But there are a couple of really good options for ergonomics.

Ergotron LX Wall Mount LCD Arm (image from Amazon)

For people looking to use this monitor as a single standalone display for their gaming/workstation, then the Ergotron LX Wall Mount LCD Arm makes a good choice. It is made up of high quality materials that is built to last for more than 10 years, particularly the solid aluminum construction. It also comes equipped with the brand's patented technology called Constant Force, which allows the arms to extend and readjust easily and smoothly (with one touch of your finger) and still holds displays firmly and securely in place.

Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm (image from Amazon)

Those who want to see two of these monitors sitting side-by-side can opt for Ergotron LX Dual Side-by-Side Arm. This dual monitor setup alternative provides great avenue for gamers to extend their monitor's resolution and play across two 27-inch monitors side-by-side. The arms also lets you position one display on top of the other for a stacking position. Those who are working with their laptops can also mount their mobile computer to the other arm and have their screen extended to the external monitor.

Design and Features

(image from Amazon)

Aesthetic wise, there is nothing new in BenQ XL2730Z, its design is similar to other BenQ monitors, which for the most part is pretty conventional – large, black bezel with slender stand and square base, with red plastic cable accent ring on its stand. The back side however, features angular quality to the design – large glossy black plastic, a finish we usually find in professional-grade monitors.

Easy Assembly and Setup

Putting this BenQ gaming monitor all together is pretty easy and straightforward. It comes in three major parts, with the stand quick to screw to the base through capacitive finger screw. The monitor can then be clipped to the stand’s section easily.

To keep the monitor clean, neat, and in good shape, you can cover it with the plastic cover (included in the box) when not in use.

Buttons and Controls

(image from Amazon)

There are five function buttons in this gaming monitor and a Power Switch, all located at the right side of the bezel. These function buttons comes with on-screen labeling, making it easy for users to figure out which button to press to navigate the menu and change settings.

Like previous models under the XL series, the BenQ XL2730Z also offers lots of gaming-centric features, including Black eQualizer, Blur Reduction, Color Vibrance, and Low Blue Light feature (to reduce eyestrain).

(image from Amazon)

Aside from that, the basoc Standard and Movie picture modes, it comes with various game modes, namely RTS (Real-Time Strategy) mode and FPS (First-Person Shooter) mode, both of which improves gaming experience through optimized gameplay, along with three programmable Gamer modes that users can set with their specific picture settings and suit their gaming needs. The basic picture options like Brightness, Gamma, Color Temperature, Sharpness, and Dynamic Contrast are all present as well.

Remote Control With 3-Button Programmable Controller for Easy Preset Navigation and Selection

(image from Amazon)

The BenQ XL2730Z also comes with a programmable 3-button controller like the brand’s previous models such as BenQ XL2420G . The controller that lets you switch between gaming presets and select picture settings without needing to access the function buttons at the right side of the monitor. However, this time, the controller is picked-shaped (not wedge-shaped compared to previous models), and it rests in a round recess in the stand rather than being attached to the right side of the base.

Generous Set of I/O Ports

The back side of the cabinet houses a generous set of connectivity option for this BenQ monitor. There are two HDMI inputs (HDMI 1.4 and HDMI 2.0), one DisplayPort 1.2 input, one DVI dual-link input, and a VGA input. There are also three USB 3.0 ports, one upstream and a microphone jack. While the left side of the cabinet houses two downstream USB 3.0 ports, microphone jack and headphone jack, with a hook where gamers can hang their headphones.

Stand with Basic Ergonomic Adjustments

The stand comes with a rectangular base, which provides decent support and stability for the massive screen. The mounting arm comes with a sliding hinge that allows users to tilt the panel 5° forward and 20° backward. It also provides 5.5 inches of height adjustment, pivot the panel 90° to switch from landscape to portrait viewing mode, and swivel the panel 90° to help find the best viewing angle.

The red hole in the middle of the stand is used for cable management.

Tech Specs

Package includes DVI, HDMI DisplayPort and USB cables, driver CD, protective cover and User Guide.

Bottom Line

The BenQ XL2730Z is all about gaming excellence, gamers will get to enjoy accurate colors and smooth gaming performance through AMD FreeSync technology, which provides smother gameplay and eliminates screen tearing. The 27-inch panel runs 2560x1440 resolution, along with deeper blacks, providing sharper image details. However, like most TN-panels, the viewing angle is a bit of an issue (IPS panels have the best viewing angle performance). Nonetheless, this BenQ gaming monitor comes loaded with gaming-features, including a generous set of I/O ports, which would be very convenient for users who want to switch from working mode to gaming mode. The stand is fully adjustable, which comes in quite handy for a monitor of its size and purpose.

The BenQ XL2730Z doesn’t come with an affordable price tag, but its price can be easily justified by its quality and performance. It’s a wise investment for people looking for a single display for work and gaming. It truly is the professional gaming monitor.
