Who is it for?

As stated above, Acer Predator X34 is designed for the most discerning gamers. This means this display is capable of meeting the demands of even the most demanding gamer, as it is fully equipped with the technology and specs to run the latest and most graphically-demanding games smoothly. Also, its wide gaming curved screen offers quite a new experience for gamers.

Benefits

Performance wise, the Acer Predator X34 monitor definitely shines in almost all categories. It has great colour accuracy, grayscale performance, pixel response and refresh rate. Combine all those things together and you get an excellent image quality with fast and smooth transitions, capable for action-packed games.

IPS Panel for Rich and Accurate Colors, with Excellent Grayscale Performance

As many of you may know, IPS panel currently sits on top as the best panel in the market when it comes to producing spot-on colors with excellent grayscale performance, making vivid images pop up better from the computer screen. Unfortunately, most gaming monitors don’t have the luxury to use this panel, as it compromises the pixel response and smooth action needed in action-packed games. Acer Predator X34 monitor on the other hand, broke this limitation by using IPS panel with great gaming specs.

This screen shows accurate red, green and blue colors, as they align nicely in their ideal CIE coordinates based on the chromaticity test. Colors in Blu-ray action-packed movies such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier remained sharp.

For its grayscale performance, the IPS panel is able to show every shade of gray. DisplayMate 64-step Gray-scale test shows shades of gray were all displayed clean, without any signs of crushed blacks or clipped whites. This means better highlight shadow details and darker blacks.

Superb Specs and Loaded with Gaming Features

This includes customizable game profiles, aim points, LED lighting effects and Overclock.

For gaming, there is Aim Point feature, which provides different aiming targets for FPS (First-Person Shooting Games) games.

There’s also the Ambient Light Features that lets users activate the embedded LED lights at the bottom edge of the cabinet. Gamers can choose from red, green, blue, orange and white colors, or have them set randomly. It also allows users to choose a style (breathing, flashing, fixed and ripple) to suit their preferences and mood.

Then there’s the Overclock feature that accelerates the monitor’s Refresh Rate from 75Hz (which is already decently fast) to 100Hz (reboot is required for changes to take effect).

Fast Pixel Response Performance, Something You Can’t Expect from an IPS Panel

Though this IPS monitor is made specifically for gaming, it is still quite impressive how it manages to run big title, demanding action-packed games in such speed and smoothness. The 4ms (gray-to-gray) Pixel Response, which is though a little short than the ultra-fast 1ms from high-quality gaming monitors that uses TN-based panel, is still fairly effective in keeping ghosting and blurs at bay.

The Input Lag is also at 10.3m (the time it takes for the controller, such as the keyboard, to recognize and execute the commands), which is fairly fast for a display of its size and panel.

Also, this monitor is embedded with G-sync technology, and enabling this feature will get rid of any screen tearing.

Good Viewing Angles, Something We Can Expect from an IPS Panel

As with any monitors out there with IPS panel, this Acer monitor shows no signs of viewing angle issues. There is no color shifting or loss of luminance, event in extreme side angles of the display. The curved screen definitely helped, and made gamers feel closer to the action.

Decent Power Consumption for its Size and Capabilities

The Acer Predator X34 monitor runs at 49 watts of power at Standard mode, which is pretty average for its size. However, considering its capabilities and specs, it can be categorized as energy efficient. Also, power consumption can be pulled down to 36 watts when Eco mode is activated.

Design and Features

Acer Predator X34 (Image from Amazon)

You will know that the Acer Predator X34 is not your typical desk monitor right at first – it features quite a huge cabinet with bezel-free design and glossy-black finish with a Chevron-shaped pattern at the back of the cabinet and a Predator logo in front.

This 34-inch gaming monitor uses an IPS (In-Plane Switching) panel technology with a UWQHD (3440x1400p) resolution at 21:9 Aspect Ratio. The screen is coated with an anti-glare coating and features a curve of 3,800R, which means if you put these displays side-to-side, you can make a circle with a radius of 3,800mm.

As a 34-inch display, we can expect quite a heavy cabinet. This Acer monitor weighs 20 lbs., and understandably, it is supported by a high-quality stand.

Buttons and Controls

This Acer gaming display has five buttons and a Power Switch, all of which are nicely placed at the right bottom edge of the cabinet. These buttons provides access to the Menu settings and pops out the On-Screen labels that makes navigation of the Menu easy. They also work as hotkeys for different functions for quick and convenient adjustments: they allow users to toggle between different inputs, choose from three user-defined gaming profiles, and choose an Overdrive mode (Off, Normal, Extreme) that accelerates the display’s Pixel Response Rate, getting rid of motion artifacts and adjusts speaker volume.

For Picture Settings options, this Acer monitor includes all the basics and more, such as Brightness, Contrast, Adaptive Contrast, Low Blue Light and Dark Boost. Also, aside from the Gamma and Color Temperature adjustments, this monitor also includes Saturation settings to fine-tune color brightness, as well as 6-Axis Color to get that perfect color quality you want by adjusting the intensity levels of red, blue, green, cyan, magenta and yellow.

There are also 5 Picture Presets, namely Standard, Movie, Graphics, User and Eco modes.

For gaming presets, there’s the Aim Point Feature, Ambient Light Feature, and Overclock feature, each has its own different contributions for better gaming experience.

With 7-Watt Speakers to Complete Your Gaming Needs

Embedded in this gaming monitor is a pair of 7-watt speakers that comes with DTS Sound Technology. It delivers solid audio output with good bass response, perfect for gamers who are running out of space on their desk to accommodate the colossal 34-inch screen, or for gamers likes to mount their display on the wall.

Basic Connectivity Options

There aren’t a lot of connectivity inputs/outputs options in this display, as it only has two video inputs, namely HDMI and DisplayPort. Both are located at the back side of the cabinet facing outward. However, this gaming monitor also comes with 5 USB 3.0 ports (4 downstream, 1 upstream), and a headphone jack.

High-Quality V-Shaped Aluminum Stand to Support the Heavy Monitor

Acer Predator X34 (Image from Amazon)

The 20 lbs. cabinet is supported by a V-shaped aluminum stand and ensures not only stability, but also offers a pair of adjustability options, which is pretty impressive for a monitor of its size. The stand allows 40° tilt (5° forward title, and 35° backward tilt) and 5-inch height adjustability.

With VESA-Mounting Holes for Ergonomic Upgrades

Obviously, tilt adjustment range and height adjustment are not enough to provide the best ergonomic setup and position for all types of users. Good thing Acer, included VESA-standard mounting holes at the back of the cabinet to allow ergonomic upgrades. This means you can easily use third-party ergonomic solutions to mount this gaming display to a better desk mount with articulating arm or to a wall-mount solution and make the screen look like it’s floating in the air.

Tech Specs

Package comes with a HDMI and DisplayPort cable, USB upstream cable, Quick Start Guide, plates and screws for wall-mounting setup.

Bottom Line

If you’re one of the many gamers out there who is looking to revamp his gaming system with a big-screen, ultra-wide monitor and can meet all your gaming needs, then look no further, the Acer Predator X34 monitor is definitely for you. It delivers excellent motion handling, with great colour accuracy and grayscale performance, not to mention the curved screen provides a better and more immersive gaming experience.

Cool gaming-feel design, generous set of gaming-centric features, USB hubs, G-Sync support, all these things make the Acer Predator X34 one of the best choices out there for big-screen, ultra-wide gaming monitors.

If there’s anything Acer could improve on in this product, it would definitely be the ports. There are only two ports available in this display. Also, the stand offers a couple of good adjustments, but definitely not enough for ergonomics and comfort for all gamers.

It may cost a little more than other gaming monitors such as Acer XR341CK and the BenQ XR3501, but it’s undoubtedly better in almost all areas, as it simply has better all-around performance. Combine that great imaging quality with excellent gaming features with the pair of loud speakers and a couple of gaming-centric features and you will have the ultimate gaming monitor.
