Acer B286HK; An In-Depth Review

There may not be many 4K contents available yet, but that hasn’t stopped many monitor manufacturers from making their flagship products into the Ultra High-Definition (UHD) race. Top names in display industry like Acer, Asus, Dell and Philips all have their own 28-inch mid-range UHD monitors that use TN (Twisted Nematic) panels, which are cheaper than the IPS (In-Plane Switching) panels. The problem with TN panels however is that, it can’t seem to match IPS in terms of color accuracy and viewing angle performance. Acer B286HK will try to crack this boundary, as its beautiful 3840 x 2160 resolution displays decent color quality for its panel and comes with generous set of features, all for a reasonable price. But is it worth its price tag? Check this in-depth review from Dual Monitors Guide to find out.

4K in Great Details: Sharp Ultra High-Definition Picture Quality

Design wise, there is nothing very special about the look of Acer B286HKit looks plain and simple. The matte black cabinet has dark gray 0.6-inch bezel, while its screen comes with a non-reflective coating that does a great job keeping glares to minimum.

Buttons and Functions

Like most Acer displays, the Acer B286HK offers easy access and navigation to its Menu settings, input source, and picture presets. The lower bezel houses six (6) buttons, which includes the on and off button and access to five (5) picture presets, namely Standard, Eco, user, Movie and Graphics. Picture settings include the basics, namely Brightness, Contrast, Color Temperature, and Sharpness.

The monitor also provides adjustments for Saturation and Hue, with 6-Axis Saturation and 6-Axis Hue settings, giving users more control over the monitor’s color quality, aside from the usual red, blue and green settings that we get from other 4K displays like Asus PB287Q, Lenovo ThinkVision Pro2840m, and Philips Brilliance 4K Ultra HD Display (288P6LJEB). Other picture quality settings includes Wide Mode (Aspect Ratio), PIP (Picture-In-Picture), PBP (Picture-By-Picture) positioning and Volume Control.

Generous Set of I/O Ports

Many 4K monitors today limit their connectivity ports to DisplayPort, the Acer B286HK however, comes with a generous set of I/O ports, giving users more options and opportunity to connect and use the display however they want. There are two DisplayPorts, one full size and one mini, an HDMI port with MHL (mobile high-definition) charging capabilities, which means you can use it to connect your gadgets and various workstation peripherals, and one dual-link DVI. All these connectors are located at the back of the cabinet, along with the two (2) downstream USB 3.0 port, one (1) upstream USB 3.0 port, and an audio input. The left side of the cabinet also houses two more USB 3.0 downstream ports for your convenience.

With Built-In 2-Watt Speakers

Like most mid-range monitors today, this one too comes with a set of built-in 2-watt speakers, and like most speakers that comes built-in with monitors, they are moderately loud, and a bit too trebly. Nothing very special, but can do the job for general use.

Fully Adjustable Stand for Better Comfort and Ergonomics, Plus VESA Mounting Hole Options

(image from Amazon)

Acer included a fully adjustable stand in B286HK, with all the adjustment options for a more comfortable setup with its widescreen display. The stand comes with a mounting arm, which comes with a slide hinge that can raise the display up to 6 inches, tilt screen up to 35°, swivel 120° (60° left and right), and rotate the screen 90° to switch between landscape and portrait orientation mode, perfect for various computer tasks, such as browsing the web and opening spreadsheets.

The stand however, doesn’t provide the best support and stability. Rather, it feels a little wobbly. Stomping the floor or tapping the edge of the monitor will cause it to wobble. Luckily, this 4K display is not a touchscreen, which makes the problem a small issue.  Those who use unstable desk and table however, may find it a little annoying.

Acer however, provides a simple and generous solution for the wobbly stand, as the cabinet comes with VESA mounting holes. This means you can easily detach the screen from its stand, and use third-party ergonomic options instead, such as LCD arms, desk mounts or wall mounts, to have a more flexible and secured setup. You can also use these options to make dual monitor or even multiple monitor setups if you want.

Tech Specs

Bottom Line

The Acer B286HK is an excellent choice for a lot of reasons. Those who are looking to upgrade their workstation to a bigger UHD screen but don’t want to spend a fortune, or deal with the sophistication of expensive models will surely enjoy this one. Its overall performance is good, and it has all the connectivity options you can ever ask for.

However, like any other products out there, it has its own shares of shortcomings as well. Color accuracy performance for one, is not at its best, and the viewing angle is not impressive as well, considering it has big screen. Also, its stand is a bit wobbly.

Despite these shortcomings, this Acer 4K UHD monitor is able to deliver gorgeous UHD image, with advanced color settings and plenty of connectivity options that gives way for convenient computer use. All in all, the Acer B286HK a reasonably priced 4K monitor, many even consider it a bargain, considering its screen size, hardware, performance and set of features.
