7 Best Free AntiVirus for 2015

Back to Page 1.

What’s the Best Out There? Here's our short list.

Panda Free AntivIrus 2016

Many experts rank Panda Free Antivirus 2016 as the best out there; it actually scored better than many paid competitors. It comes with tons of very useful bonus features such as Rescue Disk, USB vaccination, and Process Monitor.

Pros

Security Toolbar, Toolbar Cleaner, clear browsing data, Bootable Rescue Kit, and disable programs that automatically starts at startup, are just few of the many highly convenient and efficient add-ons in this free program. That’s of course, aside from the tested-and-proven ActiveScan. It also scans USB by default, USB vaccination, and Process Monitor that keeps track of all the running processes and the URLs you access.

Cons

Its phishing protection score went down from its previous score, but then again, it’s not primarily an antiphishing tool.

Verdict

Though this product doesn’t outperform many top-tier paid antivirus tools, users still get excellent protection. As a matter of fact, it’s better than many commercial tools out there, and users can get even better protection with the paid version. If you love this product and you want to even improve your protection, you can get the Panda Security Antivirus Pro 2016 commercial version here.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition (2014)

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition sticks with the basics, and delivers well. I’s efficient in removing and defending your computer system against viruses, rootkits, Trojans, spyware, and every type of malicious software.

Pros

This tool is particularly unobtrusive, which means users can focus on their work while the antivirus runs its thing on the background. No need for configuration settings, with excellent phishing protection.

Cons

There are some installation woes. Also, for free users, tech support is reachable only through email.

Verdict

The tiny window of this tool vanishes when you click on another window. It provides real-time protection and does the job quietly. You can get the Bitdefender Antivirus Plus Standard commercial version here.

Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit Free

This tool protect your browser from exploit attacks, with standard signature-based antivirus protection, even those never-before-seen zero-day attacks, Trojans, and various malicious programs that are hard to remove.

Pros

This tool is small and lightweight. It protects browsers and Java from exploits and doesn’t need any signature.  The premium version provides added protection for Office documents, multimedia players, and PDF readers.

Cons

It’s quite difficult to demonstrate its efficacy.

Verdict

This antivirus program protects your computer against attacks and exploits through your browser, document files, PDFs, etc. It doesn’t take much space on your computer. For best protection, you can upgrade to Malwarebytes Anti-Malware + Anti-Exploit Premium commercial version.

(image from Lavasoft.com)

By receiving a great user-interface makeover and a new antivirus engine partner, the Ad-Ware Free Antivirus+ 11 has quite a nice upgrade; less busy and more serene interface that is so pleasant to use.

Pros

This tool is easily one of the most attractive user interfaces out there. Scanner automatically quarantines malicious processes as it finds them, not waiting for the scan to end. It can fully block new malicious URLs. It comes with Rescue CD and command-line scanner, both are very convenient features. Plus, users get to have free remote malware remediation, if needed.

Cons

Its previous version gets better score in malware blocking test.

Verdict

With pleasing user interface, this antivirus tool is very pleasing to use, as all of its features are well categorized for easy navigation. It’s a highly competitive virus scanner and quarantines affected files while simultaneously scanning.

Avast Free Antivirus 2015

Unlike the previous tool mentioned above, nothing much changed in the interface of Avast Free Antivirus 2015 since its last year version. The features are still categorized in four big panels, while the line button on the left side is left for everything else.

Pros

This antivirus tool comes with Network Protection feature that scans and protects home router system. It scored good results in blocking of malicious URLs, plus, it’s jam-packed with tons of security-related bonus tools, such as malware scan, checks programs for missing patches, analyze router settings and flags security risks and problems and check performance issues, detects sketchy browser plugins, along with real-time protection.

Cons

Some of its bonus tools in free version are not completely effective, which means you have to get their commercial version for best protection. Phishing protection causes lags behind the browser built-ins.

Verdict

This antivirus tool has the most brilliant security protection for home and commercial users – home router security. It’s an important aspect in online security many people overlook. The central antivirus protection of the free version however, is just run-of-the-mill.

AVG AntiVirus Free 2015

The new and improved version of AVG AntiVirus Free 2015 comes with Web TuneUp tool and improves your browser security, that’s aside from its effective antivirus protection.

Pros

It comes with a safety tool that warns users of the risks and dangers of certain websites, can block tracking of web surfing advertisers, cleans browsing traces and a few more convenient features for an optimized computer performance.

Cons

It doesn’t have the best malware protection; safety feature may not be able to automatically and quickly flag malware downloads or phishing sites. Phishing protection is subpar than Chrome and Firexfox alone.

Verdict

This version sports a new and improved look than the previous one, but it still has the same quality protection. Plus, it comes with a new Web TuneUp Tool that improves users’ protection through better browser security. You can get the commercial version of AVG AntiVirus here.

Qihoo 360 Total Security Essential

There’s not much writing about Qihoo 360 Total Security Essential, but it’s good enough to have a spot in our list. This tool sports oversized icons to launch its scans, and it includes quick, full, and custom scan. If you don’t like how it looks, you can change it, as it offers variety of themes.

Pros

Quick and easy installation, even on systems already infested with malwares. It’s very effective in blocking malwaresComes with built-in feedback form for problem reports.

Cons

May mistake legitimate utilities as Trojans. Has a Proactive Defense behavior monitor that pops up queries many times, requiring commands from user, for both good and bad programs.

Verdict

This antivirus tool has quite a dependable security system, but you may have to change the default system and enable all its antivirus engines to keep everything running.
